What is a steel con?

Steel Constructors, often referred to as steel construction workers or steel erectors, are professionals who assemble, install, and secure steel frameworks and structural components for buildings, bridges, and other infrastructure projects. Their work involves reading blueprints, operating heavy machinery, and ensuring all steel parts are aligned and welded or bolted correctly for safety and stability. Steel Constructors play a critical role in the construction industry, particularly for large-scale commercial and industrial projects. They must adhere to strict safety standards and often work at significant heights. The job requires physical strength, attention to detail, and a strong understanding of construction techniques.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a steel con?

To thrive as a Steel Construction Worker, you need a solid understanding of construction principles, blueprint reading, and steel fabrication, often supported by relevant certifications or apprenticeship training. Familiarity with welding equipment, cranes, hand tools, and safety management systems is typically required. Attention to detail, teamwork, and strong communication skills help ensure safety and efficiency on the job site. These abilities are crucial for maintaining structural integrity, adhering to safety standards, and completing projects on time.

What are some typical challenges faced by steel cons on large-scale projects?

Steel construction professionals often face challenges such as coordinating with multiple trades on busy job sites, managing tight project timelines, and ensuring strict adherence to safety protocols. They must also address logistical issues like material delivery schedules and the precise sequencing of steel erection to prevent delays. Effective communication with engineers, architects, and other contractors is crucial to resolve design changes or onsite adjustments quickly and efficiently.

Job description

JOB TITLE: Senior Project Manager

COMPANY: SteelCon Inc.

POSITION SUMMARY:

Provide overall management across multiple concurrently running structural steel projects, leading customer engagement, drawings and engineering approvals, project scheduling, and budget management from pre-construction through project completion. Maintain strong client relationships and make strategic decisions impacting corporate profitability and ongoing client partnerships. Act independently with proven industry judgment and high autonomy.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Customer & Client Engagement: Cultivate strong client relations, manage expectations, and act as the primary point of contact across all assigned active projects.
  • Engineering & Drawings Approvals: Oversee and expedite the approval process for shop drawings, submittals, and engineering RFIs to maintain critical project timelines.
  • Multi-Project Management: Simultaneously lead schedule, budget, and scope management for multiple structural steel construction projects rather than focusing on a single discipline.
  • Scheduling: Maintain accurate schedule milestones throughout a project's lifecycle.
  • Contracts & Financial Controls: Negotiate, award, execute, and enforce subcontracts; perform continuous cost-to-complete reviews with Superintendents to ensure profitability within approved budgets.
  • Compliance & Risk Management: Verify full compliance with bond, insurance, and safety regulations across all assigned accounts.
  • Subcontractor & Team Leadership: Maintain strong subcontractor relationships, facilitate conflict resolution, and coordinate internal office department support to meet project milestones.
  • Close-Out: Ensure timely completion of projects ran through fabrication and field support.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Education: 4-year construction management, engineering, or related technical degree (or equivalent field experience).
  • Experience: 1-3 years of proven construction project management experience, specifically overseeing multi-project portfolios, submittals/drawings, budgets, and scheduling.
  • Management Skills: Demonstrated ability to apply innovative management techniques, drive team performance, and manage multiple complex projects concurrently.
  • Technical Knowledge: Thorough understanding of structural steel fabrication/erection, construction standards, design processes, and financial controls.
  • Interpersonal Skills: Superior written and verbal communication skills with strong diplomacy, negotiation, and conflict-resolution capabilities.

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS:

  • Salary Range: $90,000 – $150,000 annually (commensurate with experience)
  • Bonus: Annual discretionary bonus based on company and project performance
  • Benefits: Full health, retirement, and supplemental benefits (details available on the Careers tab of our website)
