JOB SUMMARY

The Student Success Studio (S3) at the Palm Desert Campus is seeking Tutors for the 2026-2027 academic year to provide academic support to students in a variety of subjects. As a Tutor, you will work one-on-one or in small groups with students to reinforce concepts covered in class, assist with study strategies, and help students build skills for academic success. You will collaborate with faculty and other tutors to develop effective learning strategies, promote student engagement, and foster a positive academic environment that supports student success.

TYPICAL ACTIVITIES

Individual and Group Tutoring:

  • Provide one-on-one and group tutoring sessions to students in designated subject areas, helping them understand course material, improve study techniques, and build academic confidence.
  • Assist students in reviewing course materials, preparing for exams, and reinforcing concepts discussed in class.
  • Offer targeted support in subject area(s) for which you are hired to cover (e.g., psychology, nursing ,math, english)

Collaboration with Faculty:

  • Collaborate with faculty to understand course objectives, identify areas where students may need additional support, and align tutoring sessions with class material.
  • Provide feedback to faculty about student progress and any academic challenges students may face.
  • Help design and implement study aids, review sessions, or other tools to support classroom learning.

Study Skills and Academic Coaching:

  • Assist students in developing effective study habits and time management strategies to improve academic performance.
  • Provide guidance on notetaking, test preparation, organizational skills, and academic writing.
  • Offer academic coaching on how to tackle complex assignments, research projects, and other academic challenges.

Workshops and Group Sessions:

  • Facilitate study groups or workshops for students to enhance their understanding of course material and foster peer learning.
  • Lead review sessions for midterms, finals, or specific topics where students need extra assistance.

Student Engagement:

  • Create a supportive and inclusive learning environment where students feel comfortable asking questions, discussing challenges, and seeking help.
  • Foster an environment that encourages self-confidence, motivation, and academic persistence.
  • Engage with students to encourage a positive attitude toward learning and build their academic self-efficacy.

Administrative Support:

  • Maintain accurate records of tutoring sessions, track student progress, and ensure follow-up as needed.
  • Assist with scheduling and coordinating tutoring sessions, both in-person and virtually, to meet the needs of students.
  • Provide feedback and contribute to the continuous improvement of tutoring practices and services.
  • Monitor student progress and provide updates to the S3 Coordinator.
  • Ensure students log in at the S3 kiosk and complete the required S3 forms.

Program Expectations:

  • Arrive on time at the Student Success Studio (IW 203) and check in.
  • Notify the S3 Coordinator of any schedule changes or absences
  • Complete and submit your timesheet on a weekly basis
  • Attend and participate in weekly or bi-weekly S3 staff meetings.
  • Assist with the planning, setup, and execution of S3-sponsored events.
  • Engage in leadership opportunities such as participating in committees, presenting during orientations, and visiting classes.
  • Contribute to the marketing and outreach efforts that promote the S3 to the broader campus community.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to explain complex concepts in a clear and accessible way.
  • Proficiency in the subject areas being tutored (e.g., math, writing, science, etc.).
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team setting.
  • Patience, adaptability, and a passion for helping students succeed academically.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Currently enrolled as a student at the Palm Desert Campus.
  • Maintain a 3.0 GPA or greater per semester and cumulative (or higher as required for specific subject areas).
  • Earned a grade of B+ or higher in the course(s) intended for tutoring
  • Students must be enrolled in at least half-time units at CSUSB (6 units undergraduate; 3 units graduate).
  • International students must have full-time enrollment at CSUSB (12 units undergraduate; 6 units graduate).
  • Eligible to work in the United States.
  • Payroll Requirement: Social Security Card.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Previous experience as a tutor, peer mentor, teaching assistant, or academic coach
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with students from diverse cultural, academic, and socioeconomic backgrounds
  • Familiarity with learning strategies and academic success tools
  • Strong subject matter expertise in relevant academic areas (e.g., STEM, writing, or other high-demand disciplines)
  • Ability to facilitate both individual and group learning sessions in an engaging and inclusive manner
  • Comfort using educational technologies and online platforms for virtual tutoring as needed

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

The person holding this position is considered a 'mandated reporter' under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.

Following a conditional offer of employment, a background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily before any candidate may start work with CSUSB. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may result in the withdrawal of the offer of employment.
