Job description

Library Media Specialist

Due to the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 new hires must have completed at least 2 years of study at an institution of higher education, obtained an associate's (or higher) degree; or met a rigorous standard of quality and can demonstrate, through a formal State or local academic assessment (Praxis Examination Must exhibit proficiency in typing, filing and demonstrate knowledge of various computer applications including word processing. Must exhibit proficiency in technical and management skills. Ability to communicate well and successfully work with students, staff, teachers and principal. Familiarity with the library classification systems. Ability to create a warm atmosphere in the media center, which will attract students and staff, and to interact positively with them.

Duties and Responsibilities: Be responsible for the maintenance of all materials, books, equipment, and supplies in the media center. Maintain a schedule that will allow for the maximum utilization of library facilities within the school building during the school day. Solicit suggestions from faculty and students for material selections and prepare and assemble data for orders. Submit all requisitions to the Building Principal. Process and circulate all materials used by teachers and students ensuring that the collection remains intact. Maintain a complete inventory of all materials and equipment and submit to Building Principal at close of school year. Maintain accurate budget, circulation, Federal program records and files such as the card catalog and shelf lists. Assist with the instruction of classes and/or students under the direction of individual building teacher(s). Conduct story hours and give talks to create interest in reading. Prepare and provide materials as requested by teacher(s). Acquaint students and staff with various media and resources available to them in addition to print media. Schedule, maintain and store all audio-visual equipment, arranging for repairs as necessary. Distribute, trace and collect materials borrowed from NWIESC. Locate resource materials from other sources in the community including public libraries as necessary. Maintain the library as an educational center. Ensure teachers and students make the greatest use and provide a warm and attractive environment conducive to learning. Consult with the Coordinator of Library Media Services and Principal on ways to improve service. Be responsible for discipline in the library, reporting difficult problems to the teacher and the principal. Exercise good judgment in handling confidential information and correspondence. Reflect a positive attitude and work ethic and promote the growth of students and the success of the educational program. Perform other such duties as assigned by the Principal
