What does a startup software developer do?

A Startup Software Developer is responsible for designing, developing, testing, and maintaining software applications in a fast-paced startup environment. Their work often involves working closely with founders and small teams to build products from the ground up, rapidly iterating based on user feedback. They may handle a variety of tasks beyond coding, such as participating in product discussions, troubleshooting issues, and sometimes even contributing to deployment and infrastructure decisions. Flexibility, adaptability, and a willingness to learn new technologies are crucial in this role. The job often requires balancing speed with quality while adapting to the evolving needs of the startup.

What are some unique challenges faced by software developers working at startups compared to larger companies?

Startup software developers often encounter a fast-paced and dynamic work environment where priorities can shift rapidly as the business evolves. Unlike larger companies with well-defined processes and teams, startup developers may need to wear multiple hats, handle a broader range of tasks, and take full ownership of projects from ideation to deployment. This can be both challenging and rewarding, as it requires adaptability, strong problem-solving skills, and the ability to work independently while collaborating closely with a small, cross-functional team. The learning curve can be steep, but it offers excellent opportunities for growth and making a visible impact.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a startup software developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Startup Software Developer, you need strong programming skills, experience with full-stack development, and a solid understanding of software engineering principles, usually supported by a degree in computer science or related fields. Familiarity with agile project management tools, version control systems like Git, and modern frameworks such as React or Node.js is highly valued. Adaptability, creativity, and effective communication are essential soft skills for navigating rapidly changing requirements and collaborating in small, dynamic teams. These skills and qualities are crucial for delivering innovative solutions quickly and driving success in the fast-paced startup environment.

Job description

ABOUT LVT

We are seeking a Senior Manager of Fullstack Software Engineering to lead high-performing teams building the user-facing platforms and robust backend services that power LVT's intelligent site technology. In this role, you will bridge the gap between complex physical edge data and intuitive cloud applications, directing the architecture of scalable APIs and highly responsive user interfaces. You will collaborate closely with Product, Design, and Platform teams to deliver seamless, real-time security and operational intelligence to our customers while mentoring and growing a world-class engineering team.

This role is based in-office out of our Headquarters in American Fork, Utah.

ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Team Leadership & Talent Development: Lead, coach, and grow high-performing teams of fullstack, frontend, and backend engineers. Recruit exceptional talent while building an environment that promotes mentorship, ownership, and long-term retention.
  • Fullstack Architecture & Scalability: Partner with Principal Engineers and Architects to design, build, and maintain highly scalable, cloud-native backend services and performant frontend architectures capable of processing real-time video and IoT data streams.
  • Product & UI/UX Collaboration: Work closely with Product Management and Product Design (UX/UI) to translate user needs into intuitive, high-quality interfaces and seamless end-to-end customer workflows.
  • Technical Strategy & Execution: Translate product strategy into technical roadmaps and execution plans, balancing near-term feature delivery with long-term architectural health and scalability.
  • Engineering Excellence: Establish and champion modern software engineering practices, including comprehensive testing, robust CI/CD pipelines, code reviews, and proactive application performance monitoring.
  • Data Integration & APIs: Oversee the development of secure, efficient, and well-documented APIs (REST, GraphQL, gRPC) that seamlessly connect our cloud-based user platforms with edge devices and downstream AI services.
  • Developer Experience & Velocity: Continually optimize internal development workflows, tools, and environments to maximize developer productivity, minimize friction, and accelerate delivery cycles.
  • Cross-functional Alignment: Partner with Security, Infrastructure, AI/ML, and Hardware teams to ensure cohesive integration across the entire LVT product ecosystem.

OUR IDEAL CANDIDATE

  • Engineering Leadership Experience: 10+ years of professional software engineering experience, including 4+ years of directly managing and growing fullstack or product-focused engineering teams in high-growth environments.
  • Fullstack Technical Expertise: Strong technical foundation with modern frontend frameworks (e.g., React, TypeScript) and robust backend ecosystems (e.g., Python, Go, Node.js).
  • Scalable Cloud Systems: Proven experience designing and operating highly available cloud-native architectures (preferably AWS) that support high-throughput data, streaming, or large-scale IoT integrations.
  • Product & Design Centricity: A strong eye for user experience and a track record of successfully delivering consumer-grade or complex enterprise SaaS web applications.
  • API Design & Integration: Deep understanding of modern API patterns, state management, and asynchronous data flows.
  • Talent Builder: Demonstrated success hiring, mentoring, and developing engineers across various career levels, fostering a culture of psychological safety, high performance, and continuous learning.
  • Strategic Decision Making: Ability to balance commercial and business urgency with technical debt, engineering capacity, and architectural scalability.
  • Education: Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field (or equivalent practical experience).

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience with real-time video streaming protocols (e.g., WebRTC, HLS) and complex data visualization tools.
  • Familiarity with IoT, computer vision, or AI/ML integrations in user-facing web applications.
  • Experience in high-growth startup or scale-up environments.
