Position Summary:
The Toolmaker II is responsible for setting up and operating a variety of machine tools to produce precision parts and instruments. Additionally, they may also
fabricate and modify parts to make or repair machine tools or maintain industrial machines, applying knowledge of mechanics, shop mathematics, metal properties, layout, and machining procedures. The Toolmaker II position requires knowledge of mechanics, shop mathematics, metal properties, layout, and machining procedures, and 5-7 years of machining experience. Employees must possess the ability to program various machines in the designated area. Working both independently and in a team environment, the Toolmaker II will collaborate with Engineering, Manufacturing and Quality.
FLSA: Non-Exempt
Job Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Construct and troubleshoot Engineering designs into a viable manufacturing process with available equipment.
  • Determine fabrication process and sequence with minimal assistance.
  • Fabricate complex jigs and fixtures to complete jobs with minimal supervision.
  • Work in both 2D and 3D environments typically within tolerances of +/-.0005".
  • Provide guidance to less senior Toolmakers.
  • Communicate effectively to supervision regarding problems and corrective action.
  • Participate in and sustain 5S Standards.
  • Participate in 5s workplace organizational activities and maintain the area in good working order through sustainment activities.
  • Must follow all required Safety and ISO procedures.
  • Regular on-site attendance and punctuality is a necessary function of this position.
  • May be required to work in other functional areas and/or facilities depending on business needs.
  • May be required to work overtime or alternate shifts based on business needs.
  • Miscellaneous duties as assigned.

Education/Experience & Skills:
  • High School diploma or equivalent, Associate's degree in Applied Science in Machine Tool, and 5-7 years of previous experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Applicable equivalent experience is considered advanced milling, turning, grinding, machine programming, CAD/CAM, metrology, quality control, fixture design and fabrication, EDM, heat treatment, and OSHA.
  • Possess an understanding of and the ability to apply geometry, trigonometry, and statistical process control.
  • Proficiency in reading and understanding blueprints and knowledge of Geometric
  • Design and Tolerancing (GD&T).
  • Ability to use various precision measuring instruments including micrometers, indicators, and both optical and physical gaging.
  • Possess basic knowledge and troubleshooting of various other industrial processes and machinery including stamping, injection molding, casting, automation, and robotics.
  • Possess basic understanding of metallurgy.
  • Must be able to clearly, concisely, and accurately convey ideas and information to others, both verbally and in written form.

Working Conditions:
  • Regularly perform repetitive tasks.
  • Work is primarily standing (90 + % of the shift) except for lunch and break periods.
  • Shifts are 8 hours, 10 hours, and 12 hours.
  • The duties of this job normally require exposure to a typical manufacturing environment. Frequent standing, sitting, stooping, squatting, walking, and stair climbing can be expected along with frequent lifting and/or moving of tooling, parts containers, and materials up to 40 pounds.
  • Must be able to reach with hands and arms, bend and kneel frequently at a minimum of 50% of the shift, as well as undergo repetitive wrist, hand, elbow, shoulder, and ankle motions.
  • Must demonstrate proficient fine motor skills, ability to grip, reach, pull, turn, and use tools to torque fixtures in various machinery or in the assembly, machining, or testing of parts.
  • Specific vision abilities required may include close vision, distance vision, peripheral and depth perception, and the ability to focus on fine print.
  • Must wear required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) where required.
  • Must comply with all work exposure EH&S training requirements and adhere to SIG SAUER Inc. security mandates.
