What is a staff research associate III?

Staff Research Associate III (SRA III) positions are advanced research support roles typically found in academic or research institutions. Individuals in this role perform complex technical and scientific work under general supervision, often designing experiments, analyzing data, and supervising junior staff. They may also be responsible for maintaining lab equipment, ensuring compliance with safety regulations, and contributing to scientific publications. SRA IIIs usually have significant lab experience and a strong background in their field of study.

What does a staff research associate III do?

A Staff Research Associate III often oversees mid- to large-scale research projects, coordinating experimental design, data collection, and analysis. While they follow guidance from principal investigators, they are generally trusted to make day-to-day decisions, troubleshoot problems, and train junior staff or students. Autonomy in the role is substantial, especially in managing laboratory operations and ensuring protocol compliance, but collaboration with faculty and other associates remains essential. This role is ideal for those who enjoy both independent problem-solving and teamwork in a dynamic research environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a staff research associate III?

To thrive as a Staff Research Associate III, you need a solid background in scientific research, data analysis, and experimental design, typically supported by a relevant bachelor's or master's degree. Familiarity with laboratory equipment, molecular biology techniques, and data management/software (such as Excel, SPSS, or specialized lab platforms) is often required. Strong attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication help you excel in collaborative research environments. These skills are vital to ensure the accuracy and reliability of research findings, support project goals, and maintain rigorous scientific standards.
