Staff Research Associate I information

What is a staff research associate I?

Staff Research Associate I (SRA I) are entry-level research staff positions commonly found in academic or research institutions. They assist with laboratory experiments, data collection, and basic analysis under close supervision from senior researchers or principal investigators. Typical duties include preparing lab materials, maintaining equipment, and recording experimental results. This role is often a starting point for individuals interested in scientific research careers and may require a bachelor’s degree in a related field. The position helps build foundational laboratory skills and experience in a research environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a staff research associate I?

To thrive as a Staff Research Associate I, you need a solid background in biological or physical sciences, typically demonstrated by a bachelor's degree or equivalent laboratory experience. Familiarity with laboratory equipment, data analysis software, and protocols such as PCR or cell culture is often required. Strong attention to detail, organization, and effective communication skills help ensure accuracy and collaboration within research teams. These competencies are vital for producing reliable research results, maintaining lab safety, and contributing effectively to scientific projects.

What are some common challenges faced by a staff research associate I when supporting multiple research projects simultaneously?

As a Staff Research Associate I, you'll often support several research projects at once, which can present challenges in time management and prioritization. Balancing tasks like data collection, sample preparation, and documentation across different studies requires strong organizational skills and adaptability. Clear communication with principal investigators and team members is essential to coordinate work schedules and manage expectations. By staying organized and proactively seeking clarification on project priorities, you can effectively contribute to multiple research efforts while maintaining high-quality results.
