What does a staff product manager do?

A staff product manager leads the development and strategy of products, working cross-functionally with engineering, design, and marketing teams. They set product vision, prioritize features, and ensure successful delivery while often mentoring junior managers and influencing company-wide product initiatives.

What are Staff Product Managers?

Staff Product Managers are experienced product professionals who lead complex product initiatives and influence product strategy at a high level within an organization. They often mentor other product managers, coordinate cross-functional teams, and drive the vision and execution of key product lines. Unlike entry-level or mid-level product managers, staff-level roles require deep expertise, strategic thinking, and the ability to handle ambiguity while delivering impactful results.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Staff Product Manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Staff Product Manager, you need deep expertise in product strategy, user experience, market analysis, and cross-functional leadership, usually supported by a background in business, engineering, or a related field. Proficiency with tools like Jira, A/B testing platforms, analytics suites (e.g., Google Analytics), and familiarity with Agile methodologies are typically essential. Outstanding communication, stakeholder management, and problem-solving skills set top performers apart in this role. These competencies are vital because they enable the Staff Product Manager to drive product vision, align teams, and deliver impactful solutions in competitive markets.

What is the difference between Staff Product Management vs Product Manager?

AspectStaff Product ManagementProduct Manager
ResponsibilitiesLeading complex product strategies, mentoring teams, setting long-term visionManaging product lifecycle, defining features, coordinating cross-functional teams
Experience & CredentialsTypically 7+ years, advanced knowledge, leadership skills3-5 years experience, foundational product skills
Work EnvironmentStrategic planning, high-level decision making, cross-team leadershipExecution-focused, project management, stakeholder communication

Staff Product Management roles focus on strategic leadership and mentoring, often requiring more experience and a broader scope. Product Managers handle day-to-day product development and feature delivery. Both roles are vital in product teams but differ mainly in scope and seniority.

Is product management a high paying job?

Product management is generally considered a high-paying role, with salaries often exceeding those of many other business or technical positions. Compensation varies based on experience, industry, and location, but senior product managers and those in tech companies tend to earn substantial salaries along with bonuses and stock options.

How does a Staff Product Manager typically balance strategic planning with hands-on execution in their daily work?

A Staff Product Manager is often responsible for setting long-term product vision and strategy, but they also need to stay engaged with day-to-day execution. This balance involves collaborating closely with engineering, design, and marketing teams to ensure that strategic goals are translated into actionable tasks. Staff Product Managers frequently lead cross-functional meetings, review progress on key initiatives, and provide guidance to more junior product managers. The role requires strong prioritization skills to manage both high-level planning and immediate project needs, making adaptability and effective communication crucial for success.

What are the 5 C's of product management?

The 5 C's of product management are Customers, Company, Context, Competition, and Collaborators. They help product managers evaluate market needs, business goals, environment, competitors, and stakeholders to make informed decisions. Understanding these elements is essential for developing successful products and aligning teams effectively.

Are PMs in high demand?

Product Managers (PMs) are in high demand across many industries due to their role in guiding product development and strategy. Companies seek skilled PMs with strong communication, technical understanding, and project management skills, often offering competitive salaries and growth opportunities.

Job description

Our Mission:
6sense's mission is to multiply what matters: growth, retention, and efficiency. We envision a future where companies, teams and people reach their full potential.
Our People:
People are the heart and soul of 6sense. We serve with passion and purpose. We live by our Being 6sense values of Win as One Team, Stay Curious, Do The Right Thing, Own the Outcome, and Create Belonging. Every 6sensor plays a part in defining the future of our industry-leading technology. 6sense is a place where difference-makers roll up their sleeves, take risks, act with integrity, and measure success by the value we create for our customers. We want 6sense to be the best chapter of your career.
The Role: Staff Product Manager, Advertising
Are you a strategic product leader who thrives at the intersection of programmatic advertising, data-driven measurement, and AI-powered go-to-market execution?
At 6sense, we are building the most intelligent B2B advertising platform on the market. We are looking for a Staff Product Manager to own the systems, partnerships, and programs that drive advertiser growth, agency adoption, and measurable performance at scale.
This is a high-impact individual contributor role reporting to the Senior Director of Product Management, Advertising.
Your Impact
As Staff Product Manager, Advertising, you will:
  • Own the product roadmap for our SSP integrations and programmatic distribution partnerships, defining segment sync architecture, bidding logic, and publisher-side identity requirements to drive audience activation at scale.
  • Build the product foundation for 6sense's agency go-to-market, including workflow, reporting, and campaign management capabilities that meet the expectations of holding company and independent agency buyers.
  • Serve as the primary product SME for Sales, Customer Success, and Solutions Engineering - creating positioning decks, battlecards, and launch readiness materials that help the field win and retain advertising customers.
  • Define the measurement and attribution strategy for 6sense Advertising, including pixel-based tracking, view-through and click-through attribution, third-party verification integrations, and reporting standards that give advertisers confidence in their investment.
  • Identify opportunities to embed AI-driven capabilities across the advertiser experience, from predictive audience optimization to automated campaign recommendations and performance anomaly detection.
  • Contribute to the multi-year advertising vision, identify white space in emerging channels, and align executive stakeholders to a cohesive advertising strategy. Mentor junior PMs and raise the bar on documentation and cross-functional execution.
Strategic Themes You'll Drive
Performance at Scale
Ensure every advertiser has access to distribution, delivery, and measurement capabilities that are enterprise-grade, transparent, and continuously improving.
Agency and Partner Ecosystem
Build the infrastructure that makes 6sense the preferred advertising platform for agency buyers and programmatic partners.
AI-Driven Advertiser Experience
Embed intelligence into every layer of the advertising workflow - from audience creation to campaign optimization to post-flight measurement.
What You'll Bring
  • Advertising Product Mastery. Deep expertise in programmatic advertising, DSP/SSP dynamics, identity resolution, and audience syndication, with a track record of delivering measurable revenue impact.
  • GTM Fluency. Experience building enablement programs, leading launch readiness, and serving as a trusted product partner to Sales and Customer Success in a high-velocity B2B environment.
  • Measurement Depth. Strong command of attribution modeling, third-party verification, pixel infrastructure, and advertiser-facing analytics. You translate data into a compelling product story.
  • AI and Emerging Tech Awareness. You track the evolving ad tech landscape and translate trends - agentic buying frameworks, contextual targeting, AI-driven optimization - into defensible product decisions.
  • Executive Communication. You present clear, data-backed strategy to C-suite audiences and drive alignment across sales, finance, and engineering.
  • Experience. 8-10+ years in Product Management, with at least 4 years in advertising technology, programmatic media, or B2B demand generation platforms.
Why You'll Love This Role
  • Impact: You own the product surface that directly drives advertising revenue growth - one of the company's highest-priority business objectives.
  • Scope: From SSP distribution architecture to agency-facing UX to AI-powered measurement, this role touches every layer of the advertiser experience.
  • Influence: You will present to and earn buy-in from executive leadership, shape the long-term advertising roadmap, and set the standard for how 6sense Advertising scales.
  • Growth: Join a high-growth organization, learn every day, and accelerate your career in a collaborative, fast-moving environment.
  • Fun: We take our work seriously, but not ourselves. Expect strong opinions, sharp debate, and the occasional well-timed meme.
