What you will do

Johnson Controls is looking for a Staff Power Electronics Engineer to play a lead role in shaping next‑generation power electronics and variable speed drive (VSD) control solutions. In this highly visible position, you’ll own the development of advanced control algorithms for embedded processors using MATLAB/Simulink, helping bring innovative ideas from concept to reality.

You’ll be hands-on throughout the product lifecycle—designing, testing, and sustaining electronic PCB assemblies and components, building and evaluating prototypes, and validating performance against clearly defined engineering requirements. Your work will directly influence product reliability, efficiency, and real-world performance.

This role is onsite at our state-of-the-art Advanced Development and Engineering Center in New Freedom, PA, where you’ll collaborate with passionate engineers and technical leaders driving innovation forward. Candidates should be within commuting distance or open to relocation—we proudly offer flexible relocation packages to support your move.

How you will do it

  • Conduct system modeling, system simulation and verification using MATLAB/Simulink with Auto-code generation.

  • Conduct prototype testing on hardware-in-loop system, variable speed drives and chiller to verify control performance.

  • Support field issue trouble shooting and control method improvements.

  • Maintain electronic circuit designs with embedded processors and FPGA/CPLD.

  • Perform worst case circuit analysis and incorporation of appropriate reliability principles to ensure reliable operation over the environmental specifications.

  • Assist internal customers to develop, test and support PCBA related projects.

  • Independently conduct and apply cost analysis to feasibility studies on proposed designs or modifications to existing designs.

  • Develop schedules which accurately reflect the project milestones and adhere to them.

  • Integrate new and modify existing processes to cover all phases of the electronic development process.

What you will need

Required

  • Minimum Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering

  • 10+ years of professional experience with power electronics, variable speed drives. If Master's degree, 8+ years of experience.

  • Strong understanding of system modeling and simulation, as well as controller design, using MATLAB/SIMULINK

  • Strong understanding of power electronics and motor control

  • Experience with Auto-code generation using MATLAB/SIMULINK

  • Familiarity with circuit design and layout tools such as Altium
