What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Staff Platform Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Staff Platform Engineer, you need deep expertise in computer science, systems architecture, and large-scale infrastructure management, typically supported by a degree in a related field and extensive engineering experience. Familiarity with cloud platforms (like AWS, GCP, or Azure), containerization (Kubernetes, Docker), and infrastructure-as-code tools (Terraform, Ansible), as well as relevant certifications, is highly valuable. Strong problem-solving abilities, leadership, and effective cross-team communication set top performers apart. These skills ensure reliable, scalable platforms and enable efficient collaboration in building resilient technology systems.

How does a Staff Platform Engineer typically collaborate with product and development teams to drive infrastructure improvements?

As a Staff Platform Engineer, you’ll work closely with product and development teams to understand their needs and design scalable, reliable infrastructure solutions. This often involves participating in architecture reviews, advising on best practices, and building or refining platforms that enable efficient deployment, monitoring, and scaling of applications. Regular collaboration may include leading technical discussions, mentoring other engineers, and coordinating cross-team initiatives to ensure alignment on infrastructure goals and technical standards.

What are Staff Platform Engineers?

Staff Platform Engineers are senior-level engineers responsible for designing, building, and maintaining the foundational systems and infrastructure that support software applications across an organization. They work on scalable, reliable, and secure platforms, enabling other engineering teams to develop and deploy their applications efficiently. Staff Platform Engineers often set technical direction, mentor other engineers, and drive improvements in automation, observability, and system performance. Their expertise ensures the technology stack is robust and capable of supporting large-scale business needs.

What is the difference between Staff Platform Engineer vs Software Engineer?

AspectStaff Platform EngineerSoftware Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's or higher in CS, experience in cloud and infrastructureBachelor's or higher in CS or related field
Work EnvironmentFocus on infrastructure, cloud systems, and platform stabilityFocus on application development and coding
Industry UsageCommon in tech companies with large-scale systemsWidespread across tech, finance, startups, and more
Search/Comparison IntentOften compared for infrastructure rolesMore general software development roles

The main difference is that Staff Platform Engineers specialize in building and maintaining the underlying infrastructure and platforms, while Software Engineers focus on developing applications. Both roles require strong technical skills, but their focus areas and responsibilities differ significantly.

Job description

About the Role

As a Staff Software Engineer on the Platform Engineering Team at Mux, you will lead the design, evolution, and long-term strategy of the infrastructure that powers Mux's high-traffic, distributed platform. You will operate as a technical leader across teams, shaping architecture, influencing engineering direction, and driving platform investments that enable the company to scale.

Our Platform Engineering team works cross-functionally to ensure that services are scalable, reliable, and easy to operate. At the Staff level, you will go beyond contributing to systems to define how those systems evolve over time. You will partner deeply with product and engineering leadership to identify opportunities, remove systemic friction, and build shared abstractions that improve the velocity and effectiveness of the entire organization.

We're looking for an engineer who thrives in ambiguity, has a strong track record of building and evolving large-scale infrastructure, and is motivated by solving complex, cross-cutting problems. If you are passionate about Kubernetes, platform design, and raising the bar for engineering across teams, you should keep reading!

What You'll Do
  • Lead the architecture and evolution of core platform systems. Define and drive the technical direction of our container orchestration, cloud infrastructure, and CI/CD platforms to meet the long-term needs of the business

  • Own cross-team technical strategy. Identify high-leverage investments, align stakeholders, and execute on initiatives that span multiple teams and products

  • Build and evolve shared platform abstractions. Create scalable, well-designed interfaces and tooling that enable product teams to move faster

  • Drive improvements to engineering processes. Lead the definition and rollout of practices that improve reliability, efficiency, and scalability (e.g., deployment strategies, incident response, architecture reviews)

  • Shape and prioritize technical investments. Define and advocate for infrastructure and technical debt initiatives across teams, aligning them with product and architectural goals

  • Debug and resolve complex production issues. Provide leadership during incidents and tackle the most challenging problems across the full infrastructure stack

  • Mentor and influence engineers across the organization. Raise the bar for technical decision-making, design quality, and operational excellence

Who You Are
  • Proven track record of designing and evolving large-scale, business-critical infrastructure systems, particularly Kubernetes platforms

  • Strong ability to operate at a systems and architectural level, making decisions that impact multiple teams and long-term business direction

  • Deep experience with Infrastructure as Code and CI/CD systems

  • Strong software engineering skills (preferably in the Go ecosystem) for building reliable and maintainable systems

  • Deep knowledge of networking and systems fundamentals (TCP/UDP, HTTP, TLS, DNS, Linux)

  • Demonstrated ability to lead ambiguous, cross-functional initiatives and drive them to successful outcomes

  • Strong collaboration and communication skills, with the ability to influence both engineers and engineering leadership

We'll Be Super Excited If You Also Have Experience In These:
  • Video technologies (ingest, live-streaming, RTMP routing, content delivery, global networking)

  • Event streaming platforms or data pipelines (Apache Kafka)

  • Distributed databases (CockroachDB, ClickHouse)

  • Edge networking and service mesh technologies (Envoy, Cilium or similar)
