What are Staff Platform Engineers?

Staff Platform Engineers are senior-level engineers responsible for designing, building, and maintaining the foundational systems and infrastructure that support software applications across an organization. They work on scalable, reliable, and secure platforms, enabling other engineering teams to develop and deploy their applications efficiently. Staff Platform Engineers often set technical direction, mentor other engineers, and drive improvements in automation, observability, and system performance. Their expertise ensures the technology stack is robust and capable of supporting large-scale business needs.

What is the difference between Staff Platform Engineer vs Software Engineer?

AspectStaff Platform EngineerSoftware Engineer

The main difference is that Staff Platform Engineers specialize in building and maintaining the underlying infrastructure and platforms, while Software Engineers focus on developing applications. Both roles require strong technical skills, but their focus areas and responsibilities differ significantly.

How does a Staff Platform Engineer typically collaborate with product and development teams to drive infrastructure improvements?

As a Staff Platform Engineer, you’ll work closely with product and development teams to understand their needs and design scalable, reliable infrastructure solutions. This often involves participating in architecture reviews, advising on best practices, and building or refining platforms that enable efficient deployment, monitoring, and scaling of applications. Regular collaboration may include leading technical discussions, mentoring other engineers, and coordinating cross-team initiatives to ensure alignment on infrastructure goals and technical standards.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Staff Platform Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Staff Platform Engineer, you need deep expertise in computer science, systems architecture, and large-scale infrastructure management, typically supported by a degree in a related field and extensive engineering experience. Familiarity with cloud platforms (like AWS, GCP, or Azure), containerization (Kubernetes, Docker), and infrastructure-as-code tools (Terraform, Ansible), as well as relevant certifications, is highly valuable. Strong problem-solving abilities, leadership, and effective cross-team communication set top performers apart. Job Summary:
Percepta is dedicated to transforming critical institutions with applied AI, collaborating with industry leaders to drive AI transformation. The Staff Platform Engineer will build the core infrastructure that powers Percepta's AI systems, working directly with customers to design and implement systems that enable AI agents to interact with real-world environments.
Responsibilities:
• Build the core platform that enables AI agents to interact with external tools, services, and environments
• Design systems that orchestrate complex multi-step workflows driven by frontier models
• Work as part of Percepta teams embedded with customers to ship production AI systems
• Extract reusable abstractions and infrastructure from real deployments
• Design reliable interfaces between AI systems and distributed execution environments
• Rapidly prototype new architectures as we explore emerging patterns in AI infrastructure
• Contribute to the evolution of Mosaic, encoding new capabilities that accelerate future deployments
Qualifications:
Required:
• 6+ years building production backend systems or developer platforms
• You're the kind of engineer who, when the abstraction doesn't exist yet, builds it rather than works around it
• Strong fundamentals in distributed systems, APIs, and service architecture
• Experience designing infrastructure that coordinates multiple services or execution environments
• Ability to work effectively in ambiguous problem spaces where patterns are still emerging
• Comfort moving quickly from prototype to production system
• High-agency mindset with strong communication and collaboration skills
• Deep curiosity about agentic workflows/abstractions
Preferred:
• Familiarity with workflow orchestration systems or task execution frameworks
• Experience building and maintaining developer platforms or internal infrastructure
• Experience working directly with customers or design partners
• Background in infrastructure, platform engineering, or distributed systems
Company:
