Job Summary
The Graduate Assistant (GA) for Fraternity and Sorority Life (FSL) assists in developing and implementing services and programs that support more than 25 sororities and fraternities within the FSL community. This role supports a co-curricular experience that promotes academic excellence, fosters inclusivity and unity, and develops ethical student leaders committed to lifelong engagement.
50% Advisement
- Assist in advising assigned councils (Panhellenic Association (PHA), Interfraternity Council, Multicultural Greek Council, and National Pan-Hellenic Council), as well as the Greek Programming Board and Order of Omega, to support effective operations and self-governance.
- Communicate regularly with student leaders to encourage responsible, values-based decision-making and accountability.
- Provide advising support that strengthens community development, promotes inclusivity and unity, and aligns with FSL and university expectations.
- Support recruitment and intake efforts, as well as initiatives that enhance diversity, equity, and member development.
- Engage in professional development through the Association of Fraternity/Sorority Advisors (AFA) and Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education (NASPA).
30% Event Planning
- Facilitate and support educational programs focused on leadership, scholarship, risk management, and membership development.
- Apply student development and organizational theory to enhance learning, engagement, and overall member experience.
- Assist in developing innovative programs and resources that incorporate technology and expand access for all FSL members.
- Collaborate with campus departments and partners to support a positive campus climate and shared community initiatives.
- Support departmental programs and initiatives, including New Member Institute, Greek Week, and National Hazing Prevention Week.
20% Administrative
- Provide administrative support for FSL operations, including roster updates, maintaining records, and managing organizational data.
- Assist with departmental programs and logistics, including the FSL Retreat, New Member Institute, Greek Week, Stellar Awards, and Student Achievement Awards.
- Support the use of university systems (e.g., Wolf Connect, ReserveWest/EMS, Campus Director, Cognito Form) for organization management and event coordination.
- Compile reports and assist with assessment efforts, including tracking participation, membership trends, and program outcomes.
- Conduct research on national trends and emerging issues impacting fraternity and sorority life to inform program development.
Required Qualifications
To be considered for a graduate assistantship at the University of West Georgia (UWG), students must meet the following criteria:
- Be fully admitted to a graduate degree program at UWG. Please note: Students admitted provisionally are not eligible for assistantship positions.
- Hold a Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution.
- Be enrolled full-time in a UWG graduate program during the assistantship period.
- Have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 in all previous and current graduate coursework and remain in good academic standing.
- Meet eligibility requirements for employment in the United States.
Preferred Qualifications
- Enrollment in the College Student Affairs master's program or a related field
- Experience within a Greek-lettered organization affiliated with councils such as the North American Interfraternity Conference (NIC), National Panhellenic Conference (NPC), National Multicultural Greek Council (NMGC), National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC), National Asian Pacific Islander Desi American Panhellenic Council (NAPA), National Association of Latino Fraternal Organizations, Inc. (NALFO), or local fraternities and sororities
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Word and Excel
- Experience using social media and marketing tools (e.g., Instagram, Facebook, Canva, Adobe Creative Cloud)
- Valid driver's license
- Strong organizational, communication, and technology skills to support programming, outreach, and administrative functions
Proposed Salary
- A monthly stipend of $1,400.00 per month
- A tuition waiver, reducing your graduate tuition to $25 per semester plus mandatory fees as long as you are employed in your assistantship.
