A staff accountant is an entry- or mid-level accounting role responsible for tasks like bookkeeping, financial reporting, and audit support. A CPA (Certified Public Accountant) is a credential earned through passing a rigorous exam and meeting experience requirements, often necessary for advanced accounting, auditing, and consulting roles. While a staff accountant can become a CPA, they are not the same; the CPA designation signifies a higher level of qualification and expertise.

Familiarity with accounting software like QuickBooks, Microsoft Excel, and ERP systems, as well as CPA eligibility or certification, is often expected. Strong analytical skills, organization, and effective communication help you manage deadlines and collaborate with team members. These skills and qualifications ensure accurate financial reporting, regulatory compliance, and efficient workflow within the accounting department.

Can you make $100,000 as an accountant?

Staff accountants typically earn less than $100,000 annually, with salaries varying based on experience, location, and industry. Higher salaries are often associated with senior roles such as senior accountant or managerial positions, which may require additional certifications like CPA and several years of experience.
