Job description

The Suwanee Police Department is seekingCertified Police Officerscommitted to serving and protecting the City of Suwanee and its residents. As first responders, police officers are vital to public safety and, under regular supervision, perform basic police services in accordance with the mission, goals, and objectives of the City of Suwanee Police Department and in compliance with governing federal, state, and local laws.


The City of Suwanee provides police service 24 hours per day, seven days per week. Shift work, including nights, weekends and holidays, is required.

Compensation:

Applicants with (1) or more years of prior certified law enforcement experience, who are employed by a state of Georgia accredited agency or another state that has certification reciprocity with Georgia P.O.S.T., may qualify for additional pay. Applicants must provide a copy of their POST record, which shows their certification is active and verifies the date they were certified by the state. Credit may be given for up to (5) years of experience.

  • All uniforms and equipment furnished by the City (Molle Outer Vest Carriers)
  • Eligible to participate in the Defined Benefit and Defined Contribution Plans on first day. Able to retire as early as 58 years of age with the Defined Benefit plan and 5 years of service.
  • Eligible for benefits after 30 day waiting period to include: medical/dental/vision, vacation/sick leave.
  • Eligible to participate in POAB. City pays 100% of the POAB dues for officers.
  • 11 paid holidays per year
  • After successful completion of FTO (Field Training Officer Program) receive a take home car (must live within 30 miles of City limits).
  • After successful completion of 12-month probation period eligible for tuition reimbursement
  • Police officers are permitted to have facial hair as long as it projects a professional image
  • Police officers are permitted to have appropriate tattoos - these are determined on a case by case basis
  • Specialized Units - such as Criminal Investigations Division, Drug Task Force, Patrol, Special Response Team (SRT), Accident Investigation Unit (AIU), and Training Division and Special Operations


ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Answers calls relayed by a dispatcher, to include: domestic disputes, burglaries, suspicious characters or activities, theft or robbery, traffic accidents, etc.
Patrols assigned geographical area of the City to monitor businesses, residences and public areas.
Investigates and gathers facts at the scene of an incident.
Writes reports and completes forms, including incident and accident reports.
Apprehends and cites traffic law violators; and directs traffic in congested areas as needed.
Provides first aid and CPR as needed; NARCAN.
Testifies in judicial proceedings when necessary.
Assists other departmental units and other law enforcement agencies as requested.
Secures and preserves the scenes of crimes and fatal traffic accidents until appropriate support units arrive to assist with the investigation.
Performs public service duties, such as assisting lost and stranded motorists, providing transportation to citizens in need, etc.
Arrests and takes prisoners into custody; and processes persons arrested.
Inspects weapons and patrol car; and monitors patrol car maintenance.
Attends training classes and outreach events.
Conducts accident investigations.
Conducts community-oriented policing activities.


Minimum Qualifications for Certified Officers

  • Must be at least 21 years of age
  • Valid Georgia driver's license.
  • Georgia Peace Officer Certification, pre-service graduation from the police academy, or equivalent certification as a Georgia Peace Officer in another state in the United States
  • Possess a valid driver's license
  • Be a U.S. citizen
  • Have a high school diploma or its recognized equivalent; college degree preferred
  • A copy of the POST record verifying certification date, certification status, and officer's status with the certifying agency.


Successful completion of the pre-employment process, which includes oral interview, background check, criminal records and traffic history check, medical and drug screening, psychological evaluation, and polygraph evaluation
