What is a Sr Structural Designer?

Sr Structural Designers are experienced professionals who are responsible for creating, reviewing, and managing detailed structural designs for buildings, bridges, or industrial projects. They work closely with engineers and architects to ensure that structures are safe, functional, and meet all relevant codes and standards. Their role often includes using advanced design software, overseeing drafting teams, and coordinating with other disciplines throughout the design and construction process.

How does a Sr Structural Designer typically collaborate with engineers and other disciplines on large projects?

As a Sr Structural Designer, you will work closely with structural engineers, architects, and professionals from other disciplines such as mechanical, electrical, and civil engineering. Collaboration often involves participating in multidisciplinary design reviews, coordinating design interfaces, and integrating feedback into detailed drawings and models. Effective communication and the ability to interpret and implement technical input from various stakeholders are crucial for ensuring that structural designs align with overall project requirements and standards. This collaborative approach helps minimize errors and ensures that constructability, safety, and code compliance are thoroughly addressed in the final deliverables.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Sr Structural Designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Sr Structural Designer, you need expertise in structural engineering principles, proficiency in drafting and design, and typically a degree in civil or structural engineering. Familiarity with industry-standard CAD software (such as AutoCAD, Revit, or Tekla), building codes, and possibly a professional engineering certification are commonly required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and manage design complexities. These skills ensure safe, efficient, and accurate structural designs that meet project requirements and industry standards.

Job description

CAREER OPPORTUNITY | ST. CHARLES, MISSOURI

Mid-Level Structural Analyst / Designer

Full-Time | On-Site | Monday-Friday, 7:30 a.m.-4:00 p.m. Central Time

The Opportunity

DOTec is seeking a Mid-Level Structural Analyst / Designer to support building design and construction-document delivery across a varied project portfolio. Working under the direction and responsible charge of licensed Professional Engineers, this position will translate design criteria into analyses, calculations, drawings, details, and coordinated BIM and CAD deliverables.

This role is intended for a practitioner who has progressed beyond entry-level work and can independently advance defined assignments, recognize coordination issues, produce review-ready work, and seek senior guidance at the appropriate time. DOTec offers broad exposure to structural systems, project types, technical mentors, and licensure-track growth.

About DOTec

DOTec Professional Corporation is a multidisciplinary engineering and architectural firm headquartered in St. Charles, Missouri. We provide structural, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, civil, and architectural services to clients across a diverse project portfolio. Our St. Charles office includes approximately 50 employees, supported by an extended network of approximately 70 contract professionals across five countries. We combine the access and agility of a closely connected firm with the reach of a larger practice.

We are intentionally multicultural and value the perspectives and strengths our team members bring to the work. Founder, owner, and CEO Dr. Ildefonso Gonzalez promotes personal achievement, continuous improvement, advanced education, professional licensure, and advancement from within. Approved licensure and credential-development expenses may qualify for reasonable reimbursement under Company policy.

What You Will Do

  1. Perform structural analysis and design for gravity and lateral systems, components, connections, and foundations using steel, reinforced concrete, masonry, wood, and other materials within demonstrated competence.
  2. Develop clear, traceable design calculations; document loads, criteria, assumptions, references, load paths, governing conditions, and engineering judgment for senior review.
  3. Prepare and revise structural plans, framing layouts, sections, details, schedules, notes, and models using Revit, AutoCAD, and applicable design software.
  4. Coordinate structural work with architectural, MEP, civil, geotechnical, and existing-condition information; identify conflicts and communicate required decisions promptly.
  5. Self-check calculations and drawings for consistency, completeness, constructability, and code alignment; respond thoroughly to quality-control comments and document resolutions.
  6. Support RFIs, submittal reviews, field observations, existing-condition verification, permit comments, and construction-phase questions under senior technical direction.
  7. Plan assigned tasks, maintain organized project files, track progress against scope and schedule, and alert project leadership early when assumptions or effort must change.
  8. Contribute to calculation templates, typical details, design standards, and junior-staff development while performing all work under the supervision required by applicable law.

What Success Looks Like

  1. Calculations are organized and reproducible, and drawings are coordinated, constructible, and ready for senior review.
  2. Assigned tasks progress predictably, with questions, conflicts, and scope or schedule risks raised early.
  3. Review comments are resolved completely, recurring errors decrease, and technical judgment continues to mature.

Required Qualifications

  1. Bachelor's degree in civil engineering, structural engineering, architectural engineering, or a closely related field from an ABET-accredited or demonstrably equivalent program.
  2. Three (3) or more years of relevant structural engineering or design experience, including building analysis and construction-document production.
  3. Working knowledge of gravity and lateral load paths, foundations, and common steel, concrete, masonry, and wood systems.
  4. Familiarity with applicable building and material standards, including IBC, ASCE 7, ACI 318, AISC 360, TMS 402/602, and NDS.
  5. Proficiency with Revit and AutoCAD and experience with structural analysis and design software such as RISA, RAM, ETABS, SAP2000, or comparable platforms.
  6. Strong technical writing, communication, organization, self-checking, teamwork, and problem-solving skills; regular on-site attendance and occasional project travel.

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Engineer Intern or Engineer-in-Training certification and active progress toward PE licensure.
  2. Master's degree in structural engineering or experience with multiple building materials and project sectors.
  3. Experience with existing-building modifications, delegated-design coordination, BIM collaboration, or construction administration.

Work Location and Schedule

This is a full-time, on-site position at DOTec's St. Charles, Missouri office. The regular schedule is 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Central Time, Monday through Friday. On-site presence is essential for direct technical collaboration, model and drawing coordination, mentoring, and access to project teams and controlled design records; no routine remote or hybrid arrangement is available. Occasional approved project travel, site visits, or meetings outside the office may be required. DOTec will consider reasonable accommodations as required by applicable law.

Compensation, Benefits, and Growth

  1. Competitive compensation commensurate with experience, education, demonstrated discipline capabilities, and assigned responsibilities.
  2. Company-paid employee medical, dental, vision, and life insurance coverage, subject to plan eligibility and terms.
  3. Annual paid vacation of two weeks during the first five years of service, three weeks from five through fewer than ten years of service, and four weeks beginning at ten years of service, administered under Company policy.
  4. Six Company-paid holidays: New Year's Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day.
  5. Professional licensure and credential-development support, including reasonable reimbursement for approved expenses under Company policy, direct access to senior technical and executive leadership, and meaningful advancement opportunities as the firm grows.

Work Authorization

DOTec does not offer employment-based immigration sponsorship for this position, now or in the future. This includes temporary nonimmigrant sponsorship and employment-based permanent-residence sponsorship, including F-1 CPT or OPT, H-1B, H-2A or H-2B, L-1, and TN classifications.

Equal Opportunity

DOTec Professional Corporation is an equal opportunity employer. Qualified applicants receive consideration without regard to any status protected by applicable law. Reasonable accommodations are available during hiring. Employment is contingent upon required identity and work-authorization verification. This posting is not exhaustive and does not create an employment contract.
