What is a Sr software architect?

Sr Software Architects are experienced technology professionals responsible for designing and overseeing the high-level structure of software systems. They work closely with stakeholders to understand business needs, create architectural blueprints, and ensure that technical solutions are scalable, secure, and maintainable. Sr Software Architects also guide development teams, establish best practices, and evaluate new technologies to improve system performance and reliability. Their role is crucial in aligning technical strategies with organizational goals.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Sr software architect?

To thrive as a Sr Software Architect, you need deep expertise in software design, programming languages, system architecture, and often a degree in computer science or related field. Familiarity with architectural frameworks (like TOGAF), cloud platforms (such as AWS or Azure), and tools like UML or version control systems is typically required. Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills help you guide development teams and translate business needs into technical solutions. These abilities are crucial for designing scalable, efficient systems and ensuring successful project delivery in complex technical environments.

What are some of the most common challenges Sr software architects face when balancing technical leadership and hands-on development responsibilities?

Sr Software Architects often juggle high-level system design with the need to stay involved in coding and technical implementation. One common challenge is allocating sufficient time to mentor and guide development teams while also ensuring the architectural vision is implemented correctly. Additionally, they must bridge the gap between business goals and technical solutions, often negotiating trade-offs and managing stakeholder expectations. Staying updated on emerging technologies while maintaining focus on project timelines can also be demanding, but it is essential for delivering scalable and robust solutions.

What is the difference between Sr Software Architect vs Software Engineer?

AspectSr Software ArchitectSoftware Engineer

Do software architects make a lot of money?

Software architects typically earn high salaries due to their advanced technical skills and experience in designing complex systems. Their compensation often reflects their expertise in areas like system architecture, cloud platforms, and programming languages, and can vary based on industry, location, and company size.

How much does a senior software architect make?

A senior software architect typically earns between $120,000 and $180,000 annually, depending on experience, location, and industry. They often have advanced skills in system design, cloud platforms, and programming languages, which can influence compensation levels.

What does a senior software architect do?

A senior software architect designs and oversees the development of complex software systems, establishing technical standards and ensuring alignment with business goals. They evaluate technologies, create architecture diagrams, and collaborate with development teams to implement scalable, maintainable solutions. Strong problem-solving skills and experience with design patterns and software development tools are essential for this role.

Ready to modernize medicine with us?

Job Description Summary:

ModMed is looking for a Senior Software Architect to serve as a technical linchpin within our Architecture Organization. Reporting directly to the Director of Software Architecture, you will be responsible for turning high-level business strategies into scalable, high-performing technical realities. You will lead the design of complex, cloud-native systems, ensuring that our software products are not only innovative but also resilient, secure, and built for long-term sustainability. As a Senior Architect, you will act as a bridge between the Director’s vision and the engineering teams’ execution, providing the technical blueprints and leadership necessary to modernize our healthcare technology suite.

What you'll do

  • Architectural Blueprinting: Define the technical solutions, assumptions, and constraints for major initiatives. You will create the technical roadmaps that align with our "multi-generation" software plans.

  • Cloud-Native Evolution: Lead the migration and optimization of ModMed products into a unified cloud engineering organization, utilizing AWS/Azure/GCP best practices.

  • Standardization & Reuse: Identify recurring patterns across different product lines to develop common frameworks, reducing duplication and driving engineering efficiency across the enterprise.

  • Hands-on Technical Leadership: While this is an architecture role, you will remain "hands-on" by developing prototypes (POCs), establishing CI/CD standards, and ensuring modern SRE/DevOps principles are baked into every design.

  • Technical Governance:** Evaluate existing systems to identify bottlenecks in performance, security, or cost, and propose actionable architectural shifts to resolve them.

  • Mentorship: Act as a mentor to staff and senior engineers, elevating the technical bar across the organization and ensuring the architecture is understood and correctly implemented.

What you'll bring

  • 10+ years of experience in software engineering, with at least 3+ years in a dedicated architectural role.

  • Proven track record of designing and scaling large-scale, distributed SaaS applications. You should be an expert in horizontal scaling, database sharding, and event-driven architectures.

  • Deep experience with cloud-native principles (Containers, Kubernetes, Serverless, and Service Mesh) and multi-cloud strategies.

  • Expert knowledge of Agile, Lean, and SAFe. You understand how to integrate architectural runway into a fast-moving development sprint.

  • Solid experience with automation frameworks, observability (APM, logging), and security-by-design (DevSecOps).

  • Exceptional ability to decompose complex problems and explain them clearly to both developers and executive leadership.

ModMed Benefits Highlight:  At ModMed, we believe it’s important to offer a competitive benefits package designed to meet the diverse needs of our growing workforce. Eligible Modernizers can enroll in a wide range of benefits:

United States

  • Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision benefits, including a company Health Savings Account contribution,
  • 401(k):  ModMed provides a matching contribution each payday of 50% of your contribution deferred on up to 6% of your compensation. After one year of employment with ModMed, 100% of any matching contribution you receive is yours to keep.
  • Generous Paid Time Off and Paid Parental Leave programs,
  • Company paid Life and Disability benefits, Flexible Spending Account, and Employee Assistance Programs,
  • Company-sponsored Business Resource & Special Interest Groups that provide engaged and supportive communities within ModMed,
  • Professional development opportunities, including tuition reimbursement programs and unlimited access to LinkedIn Learning,
