Job description

 

Cordova is seeking a Principal Serverless Architect to lead the creation and maintenance of the foundational, AWS-native systems that power our client's serverless ecosystem. This is a "big picture" role: you are the technical owner of a large-scale, event-driven platform, owning a seamless environment for building, deploying, operating, and scaling cloud-native applications.

You will act as the top technical authority on the platform, balancing long-term architectural strategy with immediate engineering needs. Because this role involves solving high-impact problems with no existing blueprint, we are looking for a professional who thrives on ambiguity and can lead through influence, not just authority, across engineering, product, security, and DevOps.

Key Responsibilities

Architectural Leadership & Strategy

  • Foundational Vision: Define the architectural roadmap for cloud-native systems and lead the design of new platforms and cross-cutting capabilities.
  • Strategic Roadmap: Balance enterprise-level architectural goals with the short-term implications of individual technical decisions.
  • Thought Leadership: Advise senior leadership as a trusted technical partner, communicating architectural direction, risk, and long-term technical debt implications.

Platform Engineering & Innovation

  • Self-Healing Systems: Architect and maintain performant, resilient, cost-optimized serverless systems using AWS Lambda, API Gateway, EventBridge, SQS/SNS, and S3.
  • Full-Stack Ownership: Optimize distributed data pipelines and RDS (MySQL) performance, and build modern front-end interfaces using React, TypeScript, and Node.js delivered via CloudFront.
  • Innovation: Drive the adoption of emerging technology, including Generative and Agentic AI, across the platform.
  • Security by Design: Implement OAuth2, OpenID Connect, cryptography, and system-hardening practices to secure the platform.

Technical Leadership & Collaboration

  • Platform Ownership: Serve as the top-level technical expert for complex, cross-system debugging and long-term platform maintainability.
  • Cross-Functional Leadership: Bridge Product, Security, and DevOps, leading multidisciplinary collaboration on architectural decisions.
  • Mentorship: Mentor senior engineers and shape engineering culture through influence rather than authority.

The Ideal Candidate

Experience & Education

  • Tenure: 10+ years of progressive software engineering experience with deep mastery of the AWS ecosystem.
  • Certifications: AWS Solutions Architect (Professional) or equivalent hands-on architectural experience.
  • Technical Breadth: Full-stack fluency, from high-level architectural patterns down to deep SQL optimization and modern React/TypeScript UIs.

Preferred Technical Skills

  • Architecture Patterns: Experience applying DDD, CQRS, and SOLID principles at scale (preferred, not a blocker).
  • AI Integration: Hands-on experience integrating Generative or Agentic AI into production systems (preferred, not a blocker).
  • Tooling: Familiarity with IaC, CI/CD pipelines, and Git workflows.
