Senior Python Full-Stack Software Engineer (AI Research Platform)

Summary: This is a Lead Developer role, with a university research group, working on a new product – design platform for Power Engineering/Generation that will incorporate AI and use API’s to integrate different systems. Team is 15 people, students / PhD’s. They will be adding more as they grow. This project should take a few years, but this is a FT role.

Employment Type: Full-Time Department: Research Lab

2 days onsite in Hamilton Ontario.

$120 - 140k + benefits

Ideal start is September 2026.

About the Opportunity

We are seeking a Senior Full-Stack Software Engineer to lead the design and development of an AI-enabled research platform from concept through production deployment. You will work directly with a multidisciplinary research team to translate research ideas into a scalable, secure, and production-quality software platform. This role requires technical leadership, hands‑on software development, and the ability to make sound architectural decisions while preparing the platform for future AI-powered capabilities such as prediction, recommendation, optimization, and intelligent decision support.

Key Responsibilities
  • Take technical ownership of the platform architecture, implementation, and delivery.
  • Design and develop modern full-stack web applications using Python and React or Next.js.
  • Build secure backend services, REST APIs, authentication, and database solutions.
  • Design scalable cloud infrastructure using AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud.
  • Implement CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, monitoring, and deployment processes.
  • Integrate external APIs, research systems, and AI/ML services.
  • Develop dashboards, reports, visualizations, and user workflows.
  • Collaborate with researchers to translate research requirements into software solutions.
  • Recommend technologies, engineering practices, and architectural improvements.
  • Produce technical documentation and support long-term platform maintainability.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field.
  • 6+ years of professional experience building production web applications.
  • 2+ years leadership in software development
  • Strong Python backend development experience.
  • Experience building modern frontend applications using React or Next.js.
  • Experience designing scalable software architecture and RESTful APIs.
  • Experience with relational databases and data modeling.
  • Hands‑on experience with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud).
  • Experience with Docker, Git, and CI/CD pipelines.
  • Strong software engineering, testing, debugging, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and make technical decisions with minimal supervision.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience integrating AI or machine learning capabilities into production software.
  • Knowledge of prediction, forecasting, recommendation, classification, or optimization techniques.
  • Experience with data visualization and analytics..
  • Familiarity with Infrastructure as Code, or modern DevOps practices.
  • Experience developing research, scientific, or engineering software.
  • Familiarity with server user access, storage, backups, monitoring, logs, and deployment support.
  • Familiarity with server-side software dependencies, environment configuration, and resource usage.

You are an experienced software engineer who enjoys building products from the ground up. You take ownership, solve complex technical problems, communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders, and deliver high-quality software that can evolve as research needs grow.

The ideal candidate

The ideal candidate will have demonstrated experience developing Agentic AI applications, including multi-agent systems, AI-driven workflow automation, autonomous decision-making, and orchestration frameworks. Experience integrating LLMs(Large language models) with external tools, APIs, retrieval systems (RAG), and enterprise software to build end-to-end AI solutions is highly desirable.
