The main difference between a Sr Fullstack Developer and a Backend Developer is the scope of expertise. A Sr Fullstack Developer handles both frontend and backend tasks, while a Backend Developer specializes in server-side development. Both roles require strong programming skills, but the Fullstack role demands broader knowledge across the entire application stack.

What is a Sr Fullstack Developer?

A Sr Fullstack Developer is an experienced software engineer who is proficient in both frontend and backend development. They work with a variety of programming languages, frameworks, and databases to build fully functional web applications. In addition to coding, senior fullstack developers often lead projects, mentor junior developers, and help make architectural decisions. Their broad skill set allows them to handle tasks across the entire technology stack, ensuring that applications are efficient, scalable, and user-friendly.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Sr Fullstack Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Sr Fullstack Developer, you need advanced proficiency in both front-end and back-end programming languages, frameworks, and a solid understanding of software architecture, typically supported by a computer science degree or equivalent experience. Familiarity with tools such as Git, Docker, CI/CD pipelines, cloud platforms, and relevant certifications like AWS Certified Developer or similar are often expected. Strong problem-solving abilities, effective communication, and a collaborative mindset are vital soft skills for this role. These competencies enable developers to deliver robust, scalable solutions and effectively drive projects to completion in dynamic team environments.

What are some typical challenges a Sr Fullstack Developer faces when balancing front-end and back-end responsibilities?

Sr Fullstack Developers often need to juggle tasks across both the front-end and back-end, which can be challenging when priorities shift quickly or deadlines are tight. Balancing deep technical knowledge in multiple frameworks and languages while ensuring seamless integration requires strong organizational skills and effective communication with both UI/UX designers and backend engineers. Additionally, staying updated with evolving technologies on both ends is crucial, so time management and continuous learning are key to success in this role.

Job description

Job Description:
At Remitly, we believe everyone deserves the freedom to access, move, and manage their money wherever life takes them. Since 2011, we've tirelessly delivered on our promise to customers sending money globally, providing secure, simple, and reliable ways to manage their money, ensuring true peace of mind.
Whether it's supporting loved ones back home, growing a business across continents, or pursuing new opportunities abroad, we're not just here to move money - we're here to move our global customers forward.
We're looking for builders, reimaginers, and global thinkers who want to work at the intersection of technology, trust, and transformation. If that's you and you're ready to do the most meaningful work of your career - we invite you to join over 2,800 passionate Remitlians worldwide who are united by our vision to transform lives with trusted financial services that transcend borders.
About the Role:
Remitly is building the Remitly Global Card, a card and wallet that give customers a single, trusted place to hold, spend, and move their money, launching across multiple geographies. As a Senior Full Stack Engineer on the Global Card team, you will own features end to end: the screens customers see, the APIs behind them, and the services that issue cards, hold balances, and move money. You will serve as a key technical voice on a cross-functional team that moves fast and builds with AI in the loop every day, agentic coding tools are part of how we work, not a side experiment, while holding the correctness and trust bar a regulated money product demands. You will report to the Engineering Manager and work in a hybrid capacity from our Arlington, VA office.
You Will:
  • Set the technical standard: Design and write code that is well-tested, resilient, extensible, and scalable - setting the quality bar for the team and making it easy for others to contribute.
  • Lead team projects: Break down complex features into parallel workstreams, provide delivery estimates, and drive execution from design through launch with a high degree of independence.
  • Guide engineering excellence: Uphold and exemplify Foundational Excellence standards - including security, reliability, observability, and quality - and proactively identify and resolve risks before they become incidents.
  • Mentor and grow the team: Guide and mentor SDE peers through code reviews, design reviews, and retrospectives. Represent Remitly's cultural values and technical competencies in interviews.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally: Partner with Product, Design, Analytics, and other engineering teams to translate customer needs into scalable technical solutions and deliver on shared outcomes.
  • Communicate with clarity: Effectively articulate complex technical problems, trade-offs, and proposals to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

You Have:
  • A degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Expertise in one or more backend or full-stack programming languages (e.g., Go, Kotlin, Java, TypeScript) and the ability to adapt to new languages and frameworks as needed.
  • Experience designing secure, scalable, and performant software using cloud-based infrastructure solutions (e.g., AWS).
  • Experience leading projects at the team level, including breaking features into parallel workstreams, estimating timelines, and coaching other engineers through mentoring, reviews, and retrospectives.
  • Demonstrated ability to navigate ambiguity in product requirements, technical design, and cross-team dependencies while driving decisions to resolution.
  • Ability to articulate best practices for error handling, observability, and operational excellence.
  • 5+ years of software engineering experience in a collaborative, cross-functional team environment.

Compensation Details. The starting base salary range for this position is typically $180,000-$225,000. Your recruiter can share more information about medical benefits offered, as well as other financial benefits and total compensation components offered with this role.
