What is a Sr EDI Developer?

Sr EDI Developers are experienced professionals who design, implement, and maintain Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) systems for organizations. They are responsible for developing and troubleshooting EDI transactions, mapping data, and ensuring seamless electronic communication between businesses and their trading partners. In addition to technical skills, Sr EDI Developers often collaborate with business analysts and IT teams to optimize data integration processes and comply with industry standards.

How does a Sr EDI Developer typically collaborate with business analysts and trading partners to ensure smooth data exchange?

A Sr EDI Developer works closely with business analysts to understand business requirements and translate them into technical EDI solutions. They often coordinate with trading partners to establish communication protocols, resolve mapping issues, and ensure data integrity. Regular meetings, clear documentation, and prompt troubleshooting are essential parts of this collaboration. This role requires strong communication skills and the ability to adapt EDI processes to meet the evolving needs of both internal teams and external partners.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Sr EDI Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Sr EDI Developer, you need in-depth knowledge of EDI standards (such as X12, EDIFACT), mapping, and integration, supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Expertise with EDI translation software (like Sterling Integrator, Gentran), scripting languages, and familiarity with ERP systems is typically required, and certifications in EDI or relevant platforms can be advantageous. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication help you manage complex data flows and coordinate with business and technical teams. These skills and qualities are crucial for ensuring seamless and accurate data exchange between organizations, which directly impacts business operations and partner relationships.

Key responsibilities

  • Own the full project lifecycle for Business Central initiatives, including scoping, planning, resourcing, risk management, testing coordination, go-live, and post-implementation support

Job description

Senior Solutions Analyst– Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central

Role

We are looking for a Senior Solutions Analyst to lead and support Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central (BC) initiatives across our warehousing, manufacturing, and supply chain operations. This role sits at the intersection of business process, functional design, project delivery, and technical execution — you'll lead cross-functional BC projects end-to-end while staying hands-on enough to dig into data, troubleshoot configurations, and speak credibly with developers and functional consultants alike.

This is a strong fit for someone who has run BC implementations or major enhancement projects in a manufacturing or distribution environment, understands how warehouse and production processes translate into ERP configuration, and is comfortable enough with SQL and basic scripting to validate data, investigate issues, and bridge conversations between business stakeholders and technical teams. This is an individual-contributor role — it does not carry people-management responsibilities — based on-site (not a remote position).

Responsibilities

  • Own the full project lifecycle for Business Central initiatives — scoping, planning, resourcing, risk management, testing coordination, go-live, and post-implementation support
  • Lead projects touching warehouse management (bin/license plate structures, inventory tracking, lot/expirationcontrol) and manufacturing processes (MES, process control, shop floor tools)
  • Translate business requirements from warehouse, production, and supply chain stakeholders into clear functional specifications for BC configuration or development
  • Coordinate with internal developers, ISV partners (e.g., warehouse/license plate extension vendors), and Microsoft partner resources on custom development, AL extensions, and third-party integrations
  • Perform hands-on data analysis and validation using SQL to support testing, migration, and troubleshooting — able to query and interpret BC data structures
  • Leadintegration-related projects (e.g., EDI, SAP-connected customer systems, document capture, payroll/HR system feeds) from a PM and functional-analysis perspective
  • Drive UAT planning and execution, ensuring test coverage reflects real warehouse and production workflows
  • Identifyprocess gaps and recommend BC configuration or light customization solutions, escalating to development resources when needed
  • Maintain project documentation, timelines, and status reporting for both technical teams and business leadership
  • Support change management and end-user training for new BC functionality
  • Serve as a point of escalation for end users on BC-related process and system questions, providing day-to-day troubleshooting support andidentifyingrecurring issues that point to broader process or configuration improvements
  • Participate in evaluating BC apps, ISV extensions, and third-party tools forfitwithin a manufacturing/warehouse environment

Skills

Required:

  • 5+ years of experience focused on Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central (or NAV) implementations or major enhancements
  • Demonstrated experience with BC in a warehousing/distribution and/or manufacturing environment (inventory management, bin/location structures, production orders, costing)
  • Strong analytical skills — comfortable digging into data and processes to diagnose root causes rather than just tracking tickets
  • Working knowledge of SQL: able to write and interpret queries against BC/SQL Server or Azure SQL databases tovalidatedata and support troubleshooting
  • Basic familiarity with software development concepts (able to read/follow AL code changes, understand extension architecture, or write simplescripts) —deep development expertise is notrequired, but technical fluency is
  • Experience managing vendor/ISV relationships and coordinating technical resources (internal or contracted developers, Microsoft partners)
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to translate between technical and non-technical audiences

Preferred:

  • Experience with formal project management practices (scoping, risk logs, status reporting, UAT planning)
  • Experience with Business Central warehouse/license plate ISV extensions (e.g., Insight Works)
  • Familiarity with Power Automate, Power BI, or other Microsoft Power Platform tools
  • Experience supporting BC in a 24×7 production environment
  • Exposure to customer-owned inventory models or compliance-driven inventory tracking (e.g., managing inventory on behalf of a customer with its own ERP/SAP requirements)
  • Experience with EDI, document capture/OCR tools, or third-party payroll/HR integrations
  • Use AI-assisted development tools (e.g., GitHub Copilot, Microsoft Copilot) to support light coding tasks such as SQL query writing, AL extension review, and small automation scripts
  • Apply sound judgment in AI-assisted development — validating AI-generated code/queries before use and escalating complex development work to dedicated developers

Success Criteria

  • BC projects delivered on time, with requirements that accurately reflect real warehouse and shop-floor operations
  • Fewer post-go-live surprises because data and process validation happened early and thoroughly
  • Business stakeholders trust that project updates are clear, honest, and grounded in technical reality
  • Developers and ISV partners see you as someone who understands the “why” behind requirements, not just a ticket router
