Job description

Location: San Francisco, CA

Since we opened our doors in 2009, the world of commerce has evolved immensely, and so has Square. After enabling anyone to take payments and never miss a sale, we saw sellers stymied by disparate, outmoded products and tools that wouldnโ€™t work together. So we expanded into software and started building integrated, omnichannel solutions โ€“ to help sellers sell online, manage inventory, offer buy now, pay later functionality, book appointments, engage loyal buyers, and hire and pay staff. Across it all, weโ€™ve embedded financial services tools at the point of sale, so merchants can access a business loan and manage their cash flow in one place. Afterpay furthers our goal to provide omnichannel tools that unlock meaningful value and growth, enabling sellers to capture the next generation shopper, increase order sizes, and compete at a larger scale. Today, we are a partner to sellers of all sizes โ€“ large, enterprise-scale businesses with complex operations, sellers just starting, as well as merchants who began selling with Square and have grown larger over time. As our sellers grow, so do our solutions. There is a massive opportunity in front of us. Weโ€™re building a significant, meaningful, and lasting business, and we are helping sellers worldwide do the same.

The Role

Squareโ€™s Financial Suite team is reimagining how small businesses understand, manage, and grow their money. Our goal is to become a trusted partner for every sellerโ€”providing powerful, intuitive financial management tools that simplify backโ€‘office operations, automate workflows, and turn complex data into actionable insight.

Weโ€™re looking for a Head of Design to lead the design vision for Squareโ€™s Financial Suiteโ€”a collection of tools that help sellers make smarter decisions, reduce costs, and drive profitability. As a key member of the Financial Suite leadership team, youโ€™ll define how product experience, brand, and research come together to deliver trust, intelligence, and simplicity at scale.

Youโ€™ll report to the Head of Design for Square, and be a key member of the Financial Suite leadership team alongside peers in Product, Engineering, and Marketing leading a team of product designers.

You Will
  • Define a cohesive vision for Financial Suite. Establish the design strategy and creative direction for how sellers experience automation, analytics, and cash flow management across Squareโ€™s ecosystem.
  • Elevate design quality and clarity. Raise the standard of excellence across every touchpointโ€”ensuring each workflow and insight feels elegant, human, and empowering.
  • Drive alignment through influence. Partner with peers in Product, Engineering, and Data Science to define priorities, shape strategy, and bring cohesive solutions to market.
  • Champion intelligence and automation. Leverage AI and machine learning to simplify complex workflows, automate manual tasks, and deliver proactive insights that help sellers make better decisions.
  • Mentor and scale design leadership. Develop design managers and senior ICs, cultivating an environment of clarity, accountability, and creative excellence.
  • Shape systems that scale. Build frameworks, design patterns, and processes that enable rapid iteration without sacrificing craft or cohesion across products.
You Have
  • 15+ years of experience in design management both leading and building product design teams.
  • A proven ability to lead through complexityโ€”guiding teams to deliver intuitive, dataโ€‘informed experiences across multiple interconnected products.
  • Expertise in product systems, service design, or workflow automation, ideally within financial or enterprise domains.
  • A strong understanding of data visualization, analytics, and predictive insights, and how they inform product experience.
  • Demonstrated impact on product strategy, user experience, and business outcomes in highโ€‘scale environments.
  • Experience working closely with Product, Engineering, and Data Science leaders to define vision, strategy, and metrics for success.
  • A track record of building inclusive, highโ€‘performing teams, and mentoring leaders to achieve their full potential.
  • A passion for exploring how AI, automation, and design systems can increase efficiency and unlock creativity at scale.
  • Exceptional communication and storytelling skills, with the ability to connect design vision to customer and business impact.

Weโ€™re working to build a more inclusive economy where our customers have equal access to opportunity, and we strive to live by these same values in building our workplace. Block is an equalโ€‘opportunity employer evaluating all employees and job applicants without regard to identity or any legally protected class. We will consider qualified applicants with arrest or conviction records for employment in accordance with state and local laws and โ€œfair chanceโ€ ordinances.

We believe in being fair, and are committed to an inclusive interview experience, including providing reasonable accommodations to disabled applicants throughout the recruitment process. We encourage applicants to share any needed accommodations with their recruiter, who will treat these requests as confidentially as possible.
