About the Role:

This position is responsible for administering and optimizing Subway’s cloud database platforms across AWS and Azure. The Cloud Database Engineer will provision and manage relational and non-relational database services, ensure high availability and disaster recovery readiness, optimize query and system performance, and enforce database security standards. They will work closely with application development, cloud engineering, and architecture teams to support Subway’s data infrastructure at scale.

Responsibilities include but not limited to:

  • Provision, configure, and manage cloud database services including Azure SQL Database.
  • Design and implement high-availability and disaster recovery configurations for all database platforms.
  • Monitor database performance; identify and resolve bottlenecks through query tuning and index optimization.
  • Enforce database security standards including encryption at rest and in transit, access controls, and audit logging.
  • Manage database backup, restoration, and point-in-time recovery procedures; conduct regular DR tests.
  • Collaborate with application and architecture teams on schema design, capacity planning, and migrations.
  • Develop and maintain database runbooks, standards documentation, and change management procedures.
  • Evaluate emerging cloud database technologies and provide recommendations for platform improvements.
  • Coach Infrastructure colleagues on Active Directory and vulnerability remediation best practices.

Qualifications (some examples listed below):

  • 5+ years of database administration experience in an enterprise environment.
  • 8+ years of experience with Windows system administration.
  • 3+ years of experience with Microsoft SQL Server.
  • 3+ years of experience designing and testing HA/DR configurations for production database systems.
  • 3+ years using Terraform to provision and manage cloud database services.
  • Strong hands-on experience with Azure SQL Database.
  • Experience with database performance tuning, query optimization, and index design.
  • Proficiency with Terraform for provisioning and managing cloud database infrastructure (required).
  • Experience applying AI/ML tools to database performance optimization, anomaly detection, or query analysis (required).
  • Bachelor’s degree in Technology, Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field.
