What are spot drivers?

Spot drivers, also known as yard drivers or yard jockeys, are responsible for moving trailers and containers within a distribution center, warehouse, or shipping yard. They do not typically drive on public roads but operate within a confined area to position trailers for loading or unloading. What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Spot Driver, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Spot Driver, you need a valid commercial driver’s license (CDL), a good driving record, and experience operating yard trucks or similar vehicles. Familiarity with yard management systems, trailer tracking software, and standard safety procedures is typically required. Attention to detail, strong communication, and the ability to work independently under time constraints are valuable soft skills in this role. These skills ensure efficient, safe movement of trailers and containers within logistics yards, helping maintain smooth warehouse operations.
