Job description

The Detroit News is seeking an outstanding Sports Editor to collaborate and direct coverage in one of the nation’s best sports towns. Our award-winning journalists cover and opine on Detroit’s professional football, baseball, basketball and hockey teams as well as historic college programs at two Big Ten universities, not to mention our robust high school programs. Interested candidates need to be able to prioritize great revelatory enterprise, recognizing our place in the national discussion, amid the daily rush of breaking sports news for our audience.

In this role, you will:

  • Respond to a robust local sports community.
  • Assign and edit stories for collegiate, high school, recreational and minor league sports.
  • Occasionally, coordinate coverage for multiple sites.
  • Establish and maintain ongoing lines of communication among sports teams across the USA TODAY Network.
  • Monitor metrics and use SEO best practices.
  • Write columns, briefs, trending articles and/or predictions

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's or master's degree in journalism or related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 5+ years of relevant management/supervisory experience
  • Proven proficiency in applying analytics to content strategy.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills.
  • Exposure to deadline-driven environment.
