Job Title: Youth Sports Staff
FLSA Status: Part-Time Non-Exempt
Reports to: Branch Executive Director Revision Date: 5/20/2026
General Function: The YMCA Youth Sports Staff is responsible for the planning, implementation, and supervision of youth sports programs that promote physical fitness, teamwork, and skill development in a safe and positive environment. This role is essential in fostering a love for sports and physical activity among youth participants, ensuring they have a fun and enriching experience.
Entry Requirements: Must be at least 18 years of age and have a high school diploma or equivalent. Possess Red Cross CPR/AED certification or obtain within the first 30 days of employment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Program Implementation: Assist in organizing and executing youth sports programs, including practices, games, and special events.
  • Coaching & Instruction: Teach fundamental sports skills and rules, ensuring all participants understand and can apply them in a supportive manner.
  • Safety & Supervision: Monitor the safety and well-being of all participants, enforcing rules and maintaining a positive atmosphere. Conduct regular safety checks on equipment and facilities.
  • Participant Engagement: Encourage participation, inclusivity, and sportsmanship among all youth participants, fostering a positive team environment.
  • Communication: Maintain open lines of communication with parents, guardians, and participants regarding schedules, expectations, and program updates.
  • Feedback & Improvement: Collect feedback from participants and parents to assess program effectiveness and identify areas for improvement.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with other YMCA staff and volunteers to ensure seamless program delivery and a cohesive experience for participants.
  • Training & Development: Participate in staff training sessions and professional development opportunities to enhance coaching skills and program knowledge.

Child Abuse Prevention Duties:
  • Adhere to policies related to boundaries with children.
  • Attend required abuse risk management training.
  • Report suspicious and inappropriate behaviors and policy violations.
  • Follow mandated abuse reporting requirements.
  • Adhere to job-specific abuse risk management responsibilities.
  • Ensure unused rooms and closets remain locked; routinely monitor high-risk locations (locker-rooms and bathrooms), etc.
  • Ensure children are properly signed in and signed out, ensure only authorized adults are allowed in the facility, etc.
