What is a sport performance internship?

A Sport Performance Internship is a hands-on learning opportunity for students or recent graduates to gain practical experience in the field of sports performance. Interns typically work with coaches, trainers, and athletes to assist in developing training programs, conducting fitness assessments, and supporting overall athletic development. These internships are commonly found with sports teams, athletic departments, and private training facilities. They provide valuable exposure to exercise science, strength and conditioning, and sports nutrition. Completing a sport performance internship can help build professional skills and network within the sports industry.

What types of projects and hands-on experience can I expect during a sport performance internship?

As a Sport Performance Intern, you can expect to be actively involved in assisting with athlete assessments, supporting strength and conditioning sessions, and collecting performance data under the guidance of certified professionals. Interns often help design and implement training programs, observe coaching sessions, and participate in team meetings to discuss athlete progress. This role offers valuable exposure to both the scientific and practical aspects of sports performance, and you'll frequently collaborate with coaches, athletic trainers, and sports scientists, building a strong foundation for a career in sports performance or coaching.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a sport performance intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Sport Performance Intern, you generally need a background in exercise science, kinesiology, or a related field, along with foundational knowledge of human physiology and athletic training. Familiarity with strength and conditioning equipment, data tracking systems, and certifications such as CPR/AED or CSCS are commonly required. Strong communication, adaptability, and a collaborative mindset help interns build rapport with athletes and coaching staff. These skills ensure interns contribute effectively to athlete development, safety, and the overall goals of the performance program.
