Job description

Position Overview
The Assistant Merchant is responsible for supporting the merchandising and growth of Tuckernuck's private label Sport business, with a focus on driving sales, profitability, and assortment productivity. This role supports the business end-to-end through assortment planning, pricing strategy, product analysis, and cross-functional execution.


The Sport Assistant Merchant will partner closely with key cross-functional teams, including the Founders, Chief Merchandising Officer, Design, Planning, Production, and Wholesale to help develop and execute seasonal Tuckernuck Sport assortments. This role will support the product lifecycle from initial concept through final delivery, including maintaining assortment and line plans, managing purchase orders, analyzing product performance, and coordinating with internal and external partners to ensure timely execution. The Assistant Merchant will also participate in sample reviews, fittings, and product approvals to help ensure design intent, quality standards, and financial goals are achieved.


Core Responsibilities

Merchandising & Assortment Management

  • Generate weekly, monthly, and seasonal performance reports for private label goods to pinpoint growth areas and mitigate business risks.
  • Develop seasonal product strategies by preparing comprehensive hindsights, line sheets, assortment plans, and category-level recommendations.
  • Spot collection gaps and new opportunities through rigorous sales data analysis, competitor benchmarking, and monitoring fashion market trends.
  • Coordinate with mainline buying teams to align private label and third-party offerings, ensuring a cohesive assortment without overlap.
  • Monitor purchase orders and stock flow to successfully meet established sales volume, profit margins, and inventory level targets.
  • Cultivate the expertise required to propose and manage in-season inventory reorders and strategic markdown initiatives.

Product Development & Buy Management

  • Provide support throughout the private label lifecycle, from initial conceptualization to the final production approval stage.
  • Own the creation and maintenance of product listings, purchase orders, and detailed line plans within RetailOps and internal systems.
  • Maintain the accuracy of merchandising and design decks by updating them with the latest assortment and planning data.
  • Partner cross-functionally with Design, Logistics, Creative, and other key teams to drive impactful product launches and sell-through.

Operations & Execution

  • Oversee the tracking of shipments and coordinate delivery logistics for all incoming private label merchandise.
  • Follow receipt timing and inventory movement to ensure synchronization with open-to-buy targets and broader business requirements.
  • Direct the organization and management of product samples during the merchandising and development phases.
  • Guarantee the integrity of product setup and ongoing maintenance within all reporting tools and internal databases.

Partnerships & Communication

  • Establish collaborative relationships with internal departments, external vendors, and wholesale partners to drive results.
  • Participate in major milestone meetings, delivering concise recaps, assortment feedback, and tracking necessary action items.
  • Engage in regular dialogue with wholesale accounts to identify specific channel needs and support continued business expansion.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree required
  • At least 2-3 years of relevant merchandising, buying, retail, or apparel experience preferred

Compensation

Compensation for the role will be determined based on the candidate's qualifications, skills, and experience. The estimated annual compensation for this role is $65,000-$80,000; classified as full-time exempt and not eligible for overtime.
