The main difference is that a Speech Pathology Supervisor oversees and manages other speech-language pathologists, focusing on supervision, training, and administrative tasks. In contrast, a Speech Language Pathologist primarily provides direct therapy to clients. Both roles require similar credentials, but the supervisor role includes additional responsibilities related to team management and program oversight.
As a speech pathology supervisor, your responsibilities are to manage the speech-language department, including its therapists and patients, to ensure that each patient gets the proper clinical therapy for their challenges related to speech and language. Your duties include hosting training and continued education meetings, assessing speech-language pathologists (SLPs), analyzing patient records, assisting patients with coordinating their services, mentoring new SLP graduates, completing SLP department administrative tasks, and ensuring that each patient receives care according to state and federal guidelines and regulations. In these jobs, you work directly with the department director and are full-time during regular business hours.
