Speech Communication And Rhetoric Jobs in Texas (NOW HIRING)

The faculty member will be a generalist in Speech Communication responsible for teaching a variety of Speech courses. These include Introduction to Speech, Public Speaking, Interpersonal Communication, and Business and Professional Speaking. Load will be a combination of online and face-to-face classes and will include two or more classes taught at local high schools. Because Midland College has a strong commitment to Dual Credit, most classes will have a significant number of Dual Credit students or students from Early College High School at Midland College

This faculty member will be student-directed—committed both to rigorous teaching that engages students in innovative ways and to a strong presence on campus through classroom engagement and management; participation in department, division, and college activities; and committee membership.  The faculty member will be highly available via office hours, phone, and email

Essential Functions

• Fulfill faculty roles and responsibilities as outlined in Midland College Policy and Administrative Regulations published in the Faculty and Employee Handbooks
• Teach in classroom and/or online
• Teach 15-18 semester hours of Art and Humanities per semester during two-semester academic year
• Serve on committees as assigned
• Mentor and advise students
• Manage classroom and maintain safety
• Maintain consistent and timely communication with students outside classroom, including phone and email communication
• Hold 10 office hours per week for student questions and conferences via telephone or in person
  Meet deadlines
• Participate in professional activities—e.g., graduate coursework, publication and/or presentation of papers, conference attendance, professional training
• Participate in community service
• Participate in yearly faculty development activities with Dean approval
• Participate in department, division, and college-wide activities 
• Participate in required annual trainings in cybersecurity, safety, Sexual Harassment, etc.
• Perform other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications

• Master’s degree in Speech required; Speech Communication degree or a Communication degree with adequate coursework (18 hours) in Speaking, Rhetoric, and Persuasion would be acceptable
• Experience teaching in college classroom
• Strong computer knowledge, including Word, learning management system, and email
• Broad knowledge and skill related to Art Appreciation. Art history, and Humanities
• Strong and effective written and oral communication skills
• Interest in research and ability to teach research skills
• Compassion for diverse students, including Dual Credit students, and a passion for teaching them

Preferred Qualifications

• Ph.D. degree
• Online teaching experience
• Knowledge of Learning Management System
• Dual credit teaching experience
• Strong leadership skills

Physical Demands

• Frequently moves equipment or paperwork weighing up to 20 pounds
• Must be able to remain in a stationary position 50% of the time
• Is capable of repetitive use of a keyboard at a workstation
• Must be able to exchange accurate information
• Needs to occasionally move from office to classroom
• Must be able to work in office and classroom setting
• Has duties indoors and some outdoors
• Must be able to work extended hours to attend Midland College or community events
