Job description

SpecPro is seeking motivated professionals to support field operations for a Mojave Desert Tortoise (MDT) Monitoring Project at Ft. Irwin, CA. We are specifically seeking individuals proficient in radio tracking who have been approved to Attach/Remove transmitters on previous MDT projects.  The position requires working independently in desert environments in potentially extreme weather conditions.  Applicants should have a vehicle capable of traversing rugged, rocky, sandy roads. 

Supervisory Responsibilities:
  • None.
Duties/Responsibilities:
  • Conduct MDT radio telemetry tracking
  • Perform transmitter removals and attachments
  • Collect accurate, complete scientific data.  Both digitally and on paper
  • Proficient, independent navigation in challenging environments
  • Manage personal workload and coordinate schedules with project manager
  • Other duties as assigned
Desired Skills/Abilities:
  • Proficient Radio Tracking experience
  • Previous USFWS Approval to Attach/Remove transmitters on MDT
  • Previous USFWS MDT Authorized Biologist approval
  • Bachelor's degree in biology, environmental science, or related field
  • Minimum 2 years of professional terrestrial biology experience
  • MDT project specific experience
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills. 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills. 
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail. 
  • Proficient in technology and equipment used in environmental inspections. 
Education and Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree in biology, environmental science, or related field
  • Experience preparing biological monitoring reports and collecting scientific data
  • Experience conducting surveys and monitoring for wildlife species in Southern California
Physical Requirements:
  • Physically able to conduct inspections and carry equipment used for inspections.
  • Ability to hike long distances over varied terrain and weather conditions
