Central Processing Laboratory Specimen Processor

Expected pay for this position is $17.66 - $19.63/hour. Actual pay will be determined by experience, skills and internal equity. This is an Hourly position.

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Central Processing Laboratory Specimen Processor performs a variety of lab duties in a high volume, fast paced, production-like environment. This position works independently and as a part of a team, handling multiple tasks simultaneously for timely receipt and routing of laboratory specimens (such as blood, urine, stool, tissue, and body fluid) according to established turnaround times. Performs sample triage, receipt, and tracking activities, to ensure timely routing of specimens to various testing departments. Accurately identifies patients, compares specimen labels and paperwork received, and accurately labels laboratory specimens. Performs various duties associated with obtaining and processing patient specimens, test orders, and results; accurately enters and updates electronic medical records such as patient demographics, billing, laboratory test orders, and specimen information. Calls critical laboratory test results and answers incoming phone calls, assisting with courier dispatch as needed. Trains new employees, and performs a variety of clerical duties.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School/GED
  • 1 year in a fast paced work environment 6 months in a customer service role.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and website navigation.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Positive, professional attitude and demeanor.

Other skills/knowledge:

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Solid computer skills, including proficiency with Microsoft software.
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills, with the ability to be detail oriented.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 1 year of experience working in a laboratory or medical/healthcare or office setting.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Experience working with an electronic medical record system, such as Epic.
  • High attention to detail in order to verify/match letters and numbers to prevent mislabeling.
  • Organized, able to prioritize and multi-task in a fast paced environment, with tight turnaround times.
  • Maintain composure while working under pressure; ability to perform job duties with frequent interruptions and/or distractions.
  • Critical thinking, problem solving skills, decisive judgment and follow through.
