Specification WriterOverview

VCBO Architecture is seeking an experienced Specification Writer to support project teams across the firm. This role is responsible for developing and coordinating architectural specifications, maintaining master specifications, and serving as a technical resource on building materials, products, and construction requirements.

The ideal candidate brings strong technical knowledge, attention to detail, and the ability to collaborate across multiple project teams to produce accurate, coordinated construction documents.

Key Responsibilities
  • Prepare, develop, and coordinate architectural specifications for projects across the firm
  • Interpret architectural drawings and project requirements to develop accurate and coordinated construction specifications
  • Develop project-specific requirements using and adapting firm master specifications
  • Maintain and improve master specifications, standards, and related resources
  • Research building materials, products, systems, industry standards, and manufacturer requirements
  • Advise project teams on material and product selection, appropriate applications, and potential alternatives
  • Collaborate with project teams to resolve specification, material, and product-related issues throughout design and construction
  • Coordinate specifications with drawings and other construction documents to support quality and consistency
  • Serve as a technical resource to project teams and contribute to continuous improvement of the firm's specification practices
Qualifications
  • Experience developing architectural specifications and construction documents
  • Strong knowledge of building materials, construction methods, building codes, industry standards, and CSI principles
  • Experience with large-scale or technically complex architectural projects preferred
  • Bachelor's degree in Architecture or a related field
  • Certified Construction Specifier (CCS) credential or architectural licensure preferred
  • Strong written and verbal communication, organization, and attention to detail
  • Ability to work independently, support multiple project teams, and manage competing deadlines
  • Proficiency with specification-writing and document review software; experience with SpecLink and Bluebeam preferred
  • Working knowledge of Revit preferred
