As of Jun 24, 2026, the average yearly pay for special process engineer in the United States is $92,018.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $74,500.00 and $103,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What engineer makes $500,000 a year?

While most engineering roles do not reach a $500,000 annual salary, some highly specialized or executive-level engineers, such as senior petroleum engineers, aerospace engineers in leadership positions, or those working in high-paying industries like oil and gas, can earn this level of compensation. Achieving such a salary typically requires extensive experience, advanced certifications, and often managerial responsibilities or ownership stakes.

What is the difference between Special Process Engineer vs Manufacturing Engineer?

AspectSpecial Process EngineerManufacturing Engineer
CredentialsTypically requires engineering degree, certifications in process management or quality (e.g., Six Sigma)Requires engineering degree, often with certifications in manufacturing or production
Work EnvironmentFocuses on specialized processes like heat treatment, welding, or coating within manufacturing facilitiesOversees overall production processes, equipment, and workflow in manufacturing plants
Industry UsageCommon in aerospace, automotive, and electronics industries with complex processesWidely used across manufacturing sectors to optimize production efficiency

The Special Process Engineer specializes in specific manufacturing processes requiring technical expertise, while the Manufacturing Engineer manages overall production workflows. Both roles require engineering backgrounds and are integral to manufacturing operations, but they focus on different aspects of the production process.

What engineers make $300,000 a year?

Senior engineers in specialized fields such as petroleum, aerospace, or software engineering can earn $300,000 or more annually, especially with extensive experience, advanced skills, and leadership roles. High compensation often involves working in high-demand industries, holding managerial or executive positions, or possessing rare technical expertise and certifications.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Special Process Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Special Process Engineer, you need a solid background in engineering principles, process control, and materials science, typically supported by a degree in engineering or a related field. Familiarity with quality management systems (such as ISO 9001 or AS9100), statistical process control (SPC) software, and certifications like Six Sigma are highly valuable. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication are essential soft skills for identifying process improvements and collaborating with cross-functional teams. These skills and qualifications are crucial for ensuring process consistency, product quality, and compliance with industry standards in specialized manufacturing environments.

Are process engineers paid well?

Process engineers typically earn competitive salaries that vary based on experience, industry, and location. They often receive additional benefits such as bonuses and opportunities for career advancement, reflecting the technical skills and certifications required for the role.

What are the 4 types of engineers?

Engineers are typically categorized into four main types: civil, mechanical, electrical, and chemical engineers. Special Process Engineers often work closely with these disciplines to develop and optimize manufacturing processes, requiring knowledge of materials, quality control, and industry standards.

What is a Special Process Engineer?

A Special Process Engineer is a professional responsible for developing, implementing, and monitoring manufacturing processes that are critical to product quality and cannot be fully verified by subsequent inspection. These processes often include heat treating, welding, coating, or chemical processing. Special Process Engineers ensure these processes meet industry and regulatory standards, often through rigorous documentation, process controls, and audits. They work closely with production teams to troubleshoot issues and improve process reliability and efficiency.

What are some common challenges faced by Special Process Engineers, and how can they be addressed in the workplace?

Special Process Engineers often encounter challenges such as ensuring strict compliance with industry standards, managing process variability, and troubleshooting complex equipment issues. Staying updated with regulatory changes and maintaining thorough documentation are essential to address these challenges effectively. Collaboration with quality, production, and maintenance teams helps in identifying root causes and implementing long-term solutions. Continuous training and adopting lean manufacturing principles can also support process consistency and improvement.

Job description

Sr. / Principal Welding Process Engineer
Location: 203A Log Canoe Circle, Stevensville, MD 21666-2128
Work Hours: 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Monday through Friday
Salary: $116,000 - $156,000/yr.

Hydrasearch is looking for a Senior / Principal Welding Process Engineer to join our team in Stevensville, MD. In this role you will be a senior technical contributor responsible for developing welding and joining capabilities that support Hydrasearch's aerospace, naval, and defense programs. This role focuses on solving complex manufacturing capability gaps and establishing the technical infrastructure required for growth in regulated markets.

This is a hands-on engineering capability development role centered on process development, qualification, and technical problem solving. You will work within a small, highly capable technical team executing rapid cycles of development, validation, and production transition. The successful candidate must balance the speed of a "builder" environment with the technical rigor required to maintain compliance.

At Hydrasearch, we value the contributions of our Military Veterans and proudly employ our nation’s heroes. Veterans are strongly encouraged to apply.

What You'll Do:

  • Capability Creation: Identify and solve manufacturing capability gaps limiting growth and develop internal welding knowledge and standards.
  • Hands-on Development: Drive rapid cycles of welding procedure development (WPS), procedure qualifications (PQR), and personnel qualifications (WPQ).
  • Technical Authority: Interpret and apply AWS, ASME, NAVSEA, and customer-specific welding requirements.
  • Design for Weldability: Provide early technical input to development teams to ensure manufacturability and prevent late-stage rework.
  • Special Processes: Support the development of joining processes including welding, brazing, and tube joining.
  • Strategic Transition: Support "make vs. partner" decisions and ensure the clean transition of qualified processes into production.

What We're Looking For:

Required Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Welding Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Engineering, or a related field.
  • Experience: 10+ years or equivalent experience in welding engineering or welding process development within compliance-driven manufacturing environments.
  • Technical Expertise: Deep knowledge of welding metallurgy, various welding processes, and inspection methods (VT, PT, RT, UT).
  • Procedure Qualification: Extensive experience qualifying welding procedures and developing welder certification programs.
  • Compliance Knowledge: Thorough understanding of AS9100 special process requirements.
  • Execution Mindset: A "builder" mindset with a bias toward execution over discussion and the ability to work effectively in small, fast-paced teams.
  • Travel: Travel my be required, both domestically and internationally.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Defense Standards: Experience with defense or naval welding standards, specifically NAVSEA Tech Pub 248/278.
  • Industry Certifications: Certified Welding Engineer (CWE) or relevant AWS credentials.
  • Regulatory Excellence: Experience preparing for and supporting NADCAP welding process audits.
  • Aerospace Proficiency: Working knowledge of AWS D17.1 and D17.2 for aerospace welder qualification.
  • Specialized Joining: Exposure to brazing and tube joining processes in high-mix, low-volume environments.

What We Offer:

  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance for you and your family
  • Competitive salary
  • Bonus programs
  • 401K retirement plan
  • Training opportunities
  • Tuition reimbursement
  • Paid vacation, PTO, and holidays
  • Gym reimbursements, and more!
