How much do spatial designer jobs pay per hour?

As of Jul 1, 2026, the average hourly pay for spatial designer in the United States is $31.64, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $28.85 and $36.30 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

How much does a spatial designer make?

The average salary for a spatial designer ranges from $50,000 to $80,000 annually, depending on experience, location, and the complexity of projects. Senior or specialized roles can earn higher, especially with proficiency in design software like AutoCAD or SketchUp. Entry-level positions typically start around $40,000 per year.

What is a spatial designer?

A spatial designer is a professional who plans and creates physical environments, such as interior spaces, public areas, or exhibitions, focusing on layout, aesthetics, and functionality. They often use design software like AutoCAD or SketchUp and collaborate with clients and other designers to achieve specific spatial goals.

What are spatial designers?

Spatial designers are professionals who plan and create environments in both public and private spaces, focusing on how people interact with these areas. They work in a variety of contexts such as interior design, exhibitions, retail spaces, events, and urban environments. Their role involves understanding the needs of users, considering aesthetics, functionality, and accessibility, and using design principles to optimize the use of space. Spatial designers often collaborate with architects, engineers, and clients to bring their concepts to life and enhance the overall experience within a space.

Is AI replacing designers?

AI is transforming the role of spatial designers by automating routine tasks and enabling new creative possibilities, but it does not fully replace the need for human creativity, spatial understanding, and contextual decision-making. Designers who adapt by learning to work with AI tools can enhance their productivity and innovation. The profession continues to value skills such as visualization, problem-solving, and client communication alongside technological proficiency.

How does a Spatial Designer typically collaborate with clients and other professionals during a project?

Spatial Designers work closely with clients to understand their vision, needs, and budget, often conducting site visits and consultations at the project's outset. Throughout the design process, they regularly coordinate with architects, engineers, and contractors to ensure their spatial concepts are feasible and align with technical requirements. Effective communication and teamwork are essential, as Spatial Designers must integrate feedback from multiple stakeholders, manage revisions, and oversee the implementation to deliver a cohesive and functional space. This collaborative approach helps ensure successful project outcomes and client satisfaction.

What is the difference between Spatial Designer vs Interior Designer?

AspectSpatial DesignerInterior Designer
CredentialsTypically holds a degree in spatial design, architecture, or related fields; certifications varyUsually has a degree in interior design or architecture; professional certification often required
Work EnvironmentDesign studios, architectural firms, urban planning projectsResidential, commercial, and hospitality interior spaces
Industry UsageUsed in urban planning, landscape, and large-scale spatial projectsPrimarily in residential and commercial interior spaces
Search & Comparison IntentOften compared for their focus on space planning and designCompared for interior aesthetics and functionality

While both roles involve designing spaces, Spatial Designers focus on the overall spatial planning, urban environments, and large-scale projects, whereas Interior Designers specialize in interior aesthetics, furniture, and space optimization within buildings. Understanding these differences helps clients choose the right professional for their project needs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Spatial Designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Spatial Designer, you need expertise in spatial planning, interior architecture, and a relevant design degree or certification. Proficiency in CAD software, 3D modeling tools like SketchUp or Revit, and familiarity with building codes are typically required. Strong creativity, collaboration, and client communication skills help you translate concepts into functional and visually appealing environments. These competencies ensure that spaces are innovative, user-centered, and compliant with technical and aesthetic standards.

What jobs are spatial visual?

Spatial designers create visual environments by planning and designing physical spaces, often using tools like CAD software and 3D modeling. They work in fields such as architecture, interior design, exhibition design, and urban planning, focusing on spatial layout, aesthetics, and functionality.

PBK

Houston, TX • On-site

Full-time

Posted 27 days ago

Job description

PBK is seeking an Immersive Experience Designer to join its Immersive Experience Design (IxD) Lab, a small, fast-moving studio focused on creating technology-driven environments for education, civic, and cultural projects.
This is a hands-on design role for someone who can take big ideas and quickly turn them into real, spatially resolved concepts.
You will work directly with the Director of IxD to develop immersive environments that integrate architecture, digital content, and storytelling. This role is critical to scaling the studio's ability to deliver high-impact work.
Your Impact:
  • Lead the spatial development of immersive environments, translating conceptual ideas into real, technically feasible designs.
  • Create and manage 3D models, diagrams, and spatial systems that support interactive, experiential, and exhibit-based projects.
  • This role plays a critical part in scaling the Immersive Experience studio's ability to deliver high-impact immersive projects and will have meaningful influence over how the studio evolves.
  • Collaborate with architects, designers, and digital experience teams to ensure design intent carries through from concept to execution.
  • Help resolve technical and spatial challenges related to fabrication, AV integration, and emerging technologies.
  • Support early-stage concept development through modeling, visual studies, and design exploration.
  • Contribute to presentations and design narratives for clients, stakeholders, and project teams.
  • Act as a key bridge between creative vision and real-world implementation.

Here's What You'll Need:
  • ***ALL APPLICANTS MUST HAVE A PORTFOLIO AND RESUME TO BE CONSIDERED***
  • Bachelor's degree in Architecture, Interior Architecture, Design, or a related field.
  • A portfolio demonstrating strong spatial design thinking, 3D modeling, and concept development.
  • Proficiency in 3D modeling and visualization tools such as SketchUp, Rhino, Revit, D5, Lumion, Enscape, or similar.
  • Strong understanding of spatial design principles and experience working on architectural or experiential projects.
  • 3+ years of professional experience in a related field.
  • Working knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign).
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate across disciplines.
  • Comfort working in early-stage, conceptual environments where problems are often undefined and solutions require exploration.

Here's How You'll Stand Out:
  • Experience with immersive, exhibit, museum, experiential, or themed environments.
  • Familiarity with AV systems, fabrication processes, or design-build workflows.
  • Proficiency in advanced tools such as Rhino/Grasshopper, Unreal Engine, TouchDesigner, or similar.
  • Ability to think systemically about how spaces, technology, content, and users interact.
  • Passion for emerging technologies and interest in how digital tools shape physical environments.
  • A desire to take ownership, grow into a leadership role, and help shape a developing creative studio.

This role offers strong growth potential and the opportunity to help define the future direction of PBK's immersive experience practice.
