To thrive as a Spatial Designer, you need expertise in spatial planning, interior architecture, and a relevant design degree or certification. Proficiency in CAD software, 3D modeling tools like SketchUp or Revit, and familiarity with building codes are typically required. Strong creativity, collaboration, and client communication skills help you translate concepts into functional and visually appealing environments. These competencies ensure that spaces are innovative, user-centered, and compliant with technical and aesthetic standards.

How does a Spatial Designer typically collaborate with clients and other professionals during a project?

Spatial Designers work closely with clients to understand their vision, needs, and budget, often conducting site visits and consultations at the project's outset. Throughout the design process, they regularly coordinate with architects, engineers, and contractors to ensure their spatial concepts are feasible and align with technical requirements. Effective communication and teamwork are essential, as Spatial Designers must integrate feedback from multiple stakeholders, manage revisions, and oversee the implementation to deliver a cohesive and functional space. This collaborative approach helps ensure successful project outcomes and client satisfaction.

Job description

About Company:

AFS Group, one of the nation's largest flooring companies, is seeking to expand our team. Since 2000, the Columbus-based AFS Group has become one of the nation's largest flooring and window treatment companies, providing quality home decor products and professional installation services to homeowners, homebuilders, property managers, wholesalers, and business owners throughout the Midwest.

About the Role:

As a Designer, you will play a pivotal role in conceptualizing and creating innovative interior and spatial designs that meet client needs and enhance user experiences. Based in our new AFS Design Studio in Carmel's Arts & Design District, you will also take ownership of the showroom environment, ensuring product displays, sample libraries, and curated vignettes remain current, well-organized, and representative of our best offerings. You will be responsible for effectively communicating design concepts from inception through to final execution. Collaborating closely with clients, architects, and contractors, you will ensure that designs are both aesthetically pleasing and functionally practical, adhering to project specifications and budgets. Your expertise will contribute to the development of creative solutions that balance form, function, and sustainability within diverse environments. Ultimately, your work will transform spaces into inspiring, efficient, and visually compelling environments that align with the client's vision and industry standards.

Our Design Studio:

AFS Indianapolis is proud to open a dedicated Design Studio inside the Indiana Design Center in the heart of the Carmel Arts & Design District. This is more than a workspace — it is a destination for clients, builders, and design professionals to experience our curated product offerings in an elevated, inspiring environment. As our Designer, you will be an integral part of bringing this vision to life and representing the AFS brand at the highest level.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Degree or equivalent experience in Interior Design, Architecture, or a related field.
  • 2+ years of experience in residential design
  • Experience in design development and project collaboration within a professional setting.
  • Well-versed in Windows PC applications with the ability to learn new systems
  • Solid math skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Certification or licensure in Interior Design or related professional accreditation.
  • Knowledge of measuring and estimating
  • Strong portfolio demonstrating expertise in home decor products, concept design, and layout development.
  • Background in project management or client-facing roles within design projects.
  • Experience managing showroom displays, sample libraries, or product merchandising.
  • Experience in sales or customer service
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Flexibility and adaptability in a fast-paced environment
  • First-rate verbal and written communication skills

Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with clients, project managers, and contractors to refine designs and ensure alignment with project goals and timelines.
  • Manage multiple projects simultaneously while maintaining a high level of attention to detail.
  • Stay current with design trends, materials, and technologies to incorporate innovative solutions into projects.
  • Serve as a design ambassador in our new AFS Design Studio at the Indiana Design Center, creating an exceptional client experience in the Carmel Arts & Design District.
  • Oversee showroom presentation and upkeep, ensuring displays are visually compelling, on-brand, and reflective of current product lines.
  • Manage the sample library — organizing, updating, and maintaining flooring and material samples so clients and team members can easily access current offerings.
  • Coordinate with vendors and the sales team to introduce new products into the showroom, rotate out discontinued lines, and keep product displays accurate and fresh.
  • Conduct regular audits of showroom inventory and samples, flagging gaps or replacements needed to keep the studio fully stocked and client-ready.

Skills:

As a Designer, you will use your design skills to create and present solutions that meet the needs of our clients. You will also use your communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate with clients and work closely with our sales team. Your attention to detail and ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously will be essential in ensuring that our clients receive the best possible service and design solutions. A strong eye for merchandising and product presentation will be key to maintaining a showroom environment that inspires clients and reflects the quality of the AFS brand.
