To thrive as a Spare Driver, you need a valid commercial driver's license (CDL), a clean driving record, and knowledge of safe driving practices. Familiarity with GPS navigation systems, route planning software, and vehicle inspection protocols is typically required. Strong time management, reliability, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for adapting to varied schedules and interacting with dispatchers or customers. This means your daily assignments may vary, and you’ll need to quickly adapt to different routes, vehicle types, and sometimes unfamiliar areas.
