What is space robotics?

A Space Robotics job involves designing, building, and programming robotic systems for use in space exploration and operations. These robots assist with tasks such as satellite servicing, planetary exploration, and habitat construction in space. Engineers in this field work on robotic arms, autonomous rovers, and humanoid robots for space missions. The role requires expertise in robotics, artificial intelligence, control systems, and aerospace engineering.

What does a typical day look like for someone working in space robotics?

A typical day for a professional in Space Robotics often involves designing, testing, and troubleshooting robotic systems intended for use in space missions. You might spend time collaborating with multidisciplinary teams of engineers and scientists, analyzing data from simulations or hardware tests, and refining software algorithms for robotic autonomy. Depending on the project cycle, your work could shift between hands-on prototyping, system integration, and writing technical documentation or reports. Regular collaboration with mission planners, systems engineers, and possibly international partners is common, offering a dynamic and intellectually stimulating work environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in space robotics, and why are they important?

To thrive in Space Robotics, you need strong expertise in robotics engineering, mechanical and electrical systems, software programming (such as Python, C++), and a degree in engineering or a related STEM field. Familiarity with simulation tools (like ROS or MATLAB), spacecraft systems, and safety certifications such as ITAR compliance or NASA-specific training are often required. Exceptional problem-solving abilities, teamwork, adaptability, and strong communication skills set professionals apart in this field. These qualifications are crucial for developing reliable robotic systems that operate in challenging and high-stakes space environments.

Job description

Who We Are
GITAI is a vertically integrated space and defense company building the next generation of hardware for low-Earth-orbit missions.
At our core is the space robotics technology that has defined GITAI from the beginning. A small, highly capable engineering team applies that foundation across satellite buses, in-orbit servicing robotics, and mission hardware for applications such as Earth observation. Today, a major focus of our work is supporting U.S. national security missions, particularly through proliferated LEO satellite constellations and other next-generation space systems.
We design, build, integrate, and test much of our hardware in-house. Electrical, mechanical, software, manufacturing, integration, and test teams work closely together, allowing a small team to own complete systems rather than isolated components. This vertical integration helps us move quickly, learn directly from hardware, and shorten the path from architecture to a working system.
We are still early. The systems, the company, and the market are all being built at the same time. Requirements change, technical problems are often ambiguous, and many answers do not yet exist. We are looking for exceptional engineers and operators who want broad ownership, can work across disciplines, and are willing to stay close to the hardware until the mission succeeds.
About the Role:
Ready for an adventure? At GITAI, we're building the future of space robotics in a dynamic, ever-changing startup environment. If you're passionate about innovation and eager to make a real impact, join us. We welcome applications from all bold explorers ready to dive in.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Science, or Business field
  • Intense passion to actively learn and grow in the dynamic environment of startup
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present ideas clearly and persuasively
  • Ability to generate innovative ideas and think outside the box
  • Ability to work independently, take initiative, and manage your own time effectively
  • Must be available to work extended hours and weekends as needed

Location:
  • Torrance, CA - Onsite workplace

Benefits:
  • Comprehensive Healthcare: 100% paid medical, dental, and vision insurance for employees, with 90% coverage for dependents, plus life insurance
  • Retirement Savings: 401(k) plan with a company match up to 3.5%, offering both traditional and Roth options
  • Relocation Assistance: Support for eligible roles to ensure a smooth transition
  • Competitive Compensation: Attractive salary packages to reward your talent and dedication
  • Equity Opportunities: Stock options in a rapidly growing startup, giving you a stake in our success (depending on role eligibility)
  • Work Hard, Play Hard Culture: Paid holidays, PTO, and sick days to keep you refreshed and motivated
  • Dynamic Work Environment: Collaborate and innovate with a passionate team
  • Office Perks: Enjoy free snacks and drinks, plus regular social events to foster team spirit
  • Cutting Edge Experience: Work alongside state-of-the-art robots, driving the future of space technology

Interview Process:
  1. Resume Screening
  2. Quick Video Call
  3. Take-Home Assignment
  4. Onsite Interview
  5. Temporary Employment as a Part-time (We'll work together for at least two weeks)
  6. Joining GITAI as a Full-time!
