How much do space biology jobs pay per year?

As of Aug 19, 2026, the average yearly pay for space biology in the United States is $172,166.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $82,000.00 and $219,500.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is space biology?

A Space Biology job involves studying how space environments, such as microgravity and radiation, affect living organisms. Researchers in this field investigate biological processes in plants, animals, and humans to support space exploration and potential long-term space habitation. They work in labs, conduct experiments on the International Space Station (ISS), and collaborate with space agencies like NASA. Their findings help develop life support systems, improve astronaut health, and advance biotechnology for both space and Earth-based applications.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in space biology?

To thrive in Space Biology, you need a strong background in biology, biochemistry, or a related life science discipline, often supported by advanced degrees and research experience. Familiarity with laboratory techniques, data analysis software, and spacecraft instrumentation is commonly required, along with any necessary certifications for handling biological materials. Critical thinking, meticulous attention to detail, and strong collaboration and communication skills set top candidates apart. These abilities are essential for conducting experiments in unique space environments and ensuring reliable results that advance our understanding of life beyond Earth.

What are some typical challenges faced by space biologists in their day-to-day work?

Space biologists frequently work with highly sensitive equipment and must adapt biological experiments to the unique and sometimes unpredictable conditions of microgravity or other space environments. Conducting research in space or in simulated space conditions often requires strict protocols, rigorous troubleshooting, and close coordination with interdisciplinary teams of engineers and mission specialists. Time constraints, the need to rapidly interpret data, and ensuring the reproducibility of results under non-terrestrial conditions are common challenges. However, these experiences offer rewarding opportunities for innovation and contribute to critical discoveries that support human space exploration and life sciences.

How much do space biologists make?

Space biologists typically earn between $60,000 and $100,000 annually, depending on experience, education, and the employer. Advanced degrees and research experience can lead to higher salaries, especially in government agencies or research institutions involved in space life sciences.

What does a space biologist do?

A space biologist studies how living organisms respond to the conditions of space, such as microgravity and radiation. They conduct experiments on spacecraft, space stations, or in laboratories to understand biological processes and support long-term space missions, often using specialized equipment and scientific methods. Their work helps develop health strategies for astronauts and advances biological knowledge relevant to Earth and space environments.
