The Sigur Center for Asian Studies is a university research institute and the academic home of the Asian Studies Program of the Elliott School. Its mission is to increase the quality and broaden the scope of scholarly research and publication on Asia, promote US-Asian scholarly interaction and educate a new generation of students, scholars, analysts, and policymakers. The Sigur Center promotes research and policy analysis on East Asia, Northeast Asia, Southeast Asia, and South Asia through an active program of publishing, teaching, public events, and policy engagement. The Center offers students the largest Asian Studies program in the Washington, DC metropolitan region, with approximately 68 faculty members working on Asia.
Position Specific Summary
Project Assistants report to Assistant Director and they assist the Program Coordinator in a variety of tasks, while building up experience in to-be-established regular duties based on interest and skill.
The assistants support event preparations by uploading event materials to the Sigur website, drafting campaigns using EMMA email software, keeping event trackers up to date, and advertising events via social media. The assistants complete day-of event activities such as checking in guests, assisting with venue and catering setup and clean-up, running microphones during question and answer sessions, and taking photos. After the event, the assistants will work on post-event tasks such entering in new subscribers on EMMA, archiving the event page, and editing and uploading event recordings to YouTube,
In addition to events support, the project assistants will support Instagram, Facebook, and LinkedIn content creation for stories & posts and will support campaign timelines for all events and other projects as directed. The assistants will use Canva and other tools to create event-related graphics that are sized and accessibility compliant for Eventbrite, the Sigur Center website, GW Events Calendar, and social media. The assistants will also be responsible for updating the Sigur Center website.
Project Assistants share front desk duties for the Asian Studies Suite, with the Sigur Center's partner institute, the GW Institute for Korean Studies (GWIKS). While completing their other duties, project assistants will be asked to sit at Suite's front desk where they will greet visitors to the Suite, direct visitors to faculty/staff offices, and distribute incoming mail to faculty/staff mailboxes.
Additional tasks may be assigned based on the center's needs.
Hours: Approximately 10 per week (dependent on department needs)
Standard Position Description
The student will assist in the administrative functions of special projects. Tasks may include:assist with project or program development and maintenance, perform administrative tasks, assist in data collection and data entry, attend and assist in the scheduling of meetings, provide support for events related to the project/program. Special projects or other duties may be assigned related to specific departmental needs.
Professional Outcomes Critical Thinking, Teamwork, Communication, Professionalism Required Qualifications
This is an entry level position, little to no experience required, all training will be provided (Students working in an instructional capacity should be very familiar with the subject area in which they are working).
Preferred Qualifications
Some experience in webinar/event management, graphic design software (Canva), social media marketing, and email marketing (EMMA) and/or an enthusiasm to learn are greatly valued. An academic or professional interest in Asian Studies is highly desired
