What does a source inspector do?

As a source inspector, you act as a field representative for a manufacturing company. Your duties involve inspecting materials and components at the facility that produces them. You work to ensure that parts meet their required specifications, and you do this by looking at blueprints and data. Other responsibilities include taking measurements, performing tests using computer equipment or electrical devices, and assessing other variables such as density, strength, and durability. You document the results of these inspections and create a report for your client or employer. Many source inspectors work in the aerospace industry.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a source inspector, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Source Inspector, you need a solid understanding of quality control standards, inspection procedures, and relevant industry regulations, often supported by a technical degree or certification such as ASQ Certified Quality Inspector. Familiarity with measurement tools, inspection software, and documentation systems is typically required. Attention to detail, strong analytical thinking, and effective communication are critical soft skills for ensuring accurate assessments and clear reporting. These skills and qualifications are essential for maintaining product quality, meeting client specifications, and supporting supplier compliance.

How does a source inspector typically collaborate with suppliers and internal quality teams during the inspection process?

Source Inspectors work closely with suppliers to verify that products and components meet specified quality standards before shipment. They coordinate with internal quality assurance teams to ensure that inspection criteria align with company and industry requirements. Effective communication and documentation are essential, as Source Inspectors often discuss findings, resolve discrepancies, and provide feedback to both the supplier and their own organization. This collaborative approach helps prevent costly quality issues downstream and fosters strong supplier relationships.

What is the difference between Source Inspector vs Quality Control Inspector?

Air Products seeks a Source Inspection Lead. The lead is responsible for supporting and managing Air Products' source inspection activities for both domestic and international projects. This role works closely with engineering, project management, procurement, suppliers, and third-party inspectors to ensure equipment and materials are manufactured in accordance with purchase order requirements, applicable codes and standards, and Air Products specifications. The position plays a critical role in driving supplier quality performance, preventing defects, resolving inspection findings, and ensuring timely delivery of high-quality equipment to projects.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and coordinate source inspection activities for domestic and international projects, ensuring compliance with inspection and test plans (ITPs), purchase order requirements, and applicable standards.

  • Manage and oversee third-party inspection agencies and inspectors performing quality surveillance at supplier and sub-supplier facilities.

  • Review welding procedures, non-destructive examination (NDE) procedures, quality control plans, and inspection and test plans to verify compliance with project requirements.

  • Coordinate inspection schedules with suppliers and validate production readiness before inspection activities occur.

  • Perform and oversee inspections related to material traceability, welding, dimensional verification, cleanliness, testing, and final equipment acceptance.

  • Ensure inspection requirements are properly documented and maintained within SmartPlant Materials (SPMAT) and other applicable systems.

  • Monitor supplier performance and proactively identify, communicate, and resolve quality concerns throughout the manufacturing process.

  • Issue, track, and follow up on Non-Conformance Reports (NCRs), punch list items, and corrective actions to closure.

  • Prepare, review, and distribute detailed inspection reports in a timely manner following inspection activities.

  • Collaborate with project teams, procurement, expediting, and engineering functions to mitigate quality risks and drive continuous improvement.

  • Participate in pre-inspection meetings and supplier discussions to communicate quality expectations and lessons learned.

  • Provide technical guidance, mentorship, and leadership to site inspection personnel and third-party inspection teams.

  • Support project execution activities by sharing inspection knowledge, best practices, and continuous improvement initiatives.

  • Travel to supplier facilities and project sites to oversee inspection activities and perform field or shop floor inspections as required.

  • Ensure all inspection activities are conducted safely and in accordance with company health, safety, and quality standards.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or a related technical discipline.

  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in quality assurance, quality control, source inspection, or manufacturing inspection.

  • Strong knowledge of inspection processes, quality management practices, and supplier quality programs.

  • Experience reviewing welding procedures, inspection plans, NDE procedures, and manufacturing documentation.

  • Working knowledge of industry codes and standards related to pressure vessels, process piping, heat exchangers, valves, instrumentation, switchgear, fabrication skids, steam generators, and related equipment.

  • Familiarity with welding processes, material specifications, and metal fabrication practices.

  • Certifications in welding inspection and/or NDE methods (PT, MT, UT, RT) preferred.

  • Experience working with SmartPlant Materials (SPMAT), SAP, and Microsoft Office applications.

  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, specifications, and technical documentation.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to effectively engage suppliers, inspectors, and cross-functional teams.

  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities, make sound decisions, and work effectively in a fast-paced project environment.

  • Willingness and ability to travel domestically and internationally, including performing inspections in manufacturing and shop environments.
