Job description

Letโ€™s face it, a company whose mission is human transformation better have some fresh thinking about the employer/employee relationship.

We do. We canโ€™t cram it all in here, but youโ€™ll start noticing it from the first interview.

Even our candidate experience is different. And when you get an offer from us (and accept it), you get way more than a paycheck. You get a personal BetterUp Coach, a development plan, a trained and coached manager, the most amazing team youโ€™ve ever met (yes, each with their own personal BetterUp Coach), and most importantly, work that matters.

This makes for a remarkably focused and fulfilling work experience. Frankly, itโ€™s not for everyone. But for people with fire in their belly, itโ€™s a gameโ€‘changing, careerโ€‘defining, soulโ€‘lifting move.

Hybrid Work Policy & Hub LocationsBetterUp is a hybrid company that values in-person collaboration. Our US hub locations include: Austin, TX; New York City, NY; San Francisco, CA; and the Arlington, VA.

  • Hybrid Expectation: You will be expected to work from your local office at least 2 days per week (or 8 days per month) and should be able to realistically commit to this structure before applying. This hybrid role will require travel up to 25% of the time for client engagements.

  • If you are not located near a hub: You will work as a fully remote employee. This remote role will require travel up to 40% of the time for client engagements and internal BetterUp purposes.

This role is open to candidates across the US. Please review the above carefully and ensure the applicable model works for your situation before applying.

Join us and we promise you the most intense and fulfilling years of your career, doing lifeโ€‘changing work in a fun, inventive, soulful culture.

If that sounds excitingโ€”and the job description below feels like a fit,we really should start talking.

BetterUp's most strategic enterprise opportunities don't just need a great Solutions Engineer โ€” they need someone whose reputation precedes them. As Principal Solutions Engineer, you'll be a trusted advisor to our executive leadership team, the singleโ€‘threaded owner of platformโ€‘defining engagements, and a recognized technical voice in enterprise HR Tech that opens doors before a deal ever begins.

This role exists at the intersection of SE excellence, executive influence, and external credibility. You'll define how BetterUp is perceived by technical buyers across the market โ€” not just in individual accounts. And you'll set the longโ€‘term technical vision for the SE function itself.

Note: The Principal Solutions Engineer title requires preโ€‘approval from the SE Director and a Coโ€‘Founder. The substantive bar โ€” a proprietary external network of CIO, CISO, and CFOโ€‘level relationships that cannot be built internally โ€” is the reason this approval exists

What youโ€™ll do:
  • Serve as singleโ€‘threaded owner for BetterUp's most complex, platformโ€‘defining engagements โ€” Fortune 100 deployments, government, multiโ€‘region rollouts, and deals where the primary buyer is not HR

  • Operate as a trusted advisor to the ELT (CEO, CRO, CPO, CTO) on platform strategy, integration roadmap, and the longโ€‘term design of the SE function

  • Bring a proprietary external network into BetterUp โ€” CIO, CISO, and CFOโ€‘level relationships that exist before a deal starts and persist after it closes, accelerating enterprise pipeline in ways no internal team member can replicate

  • Define BetterUp's integration and security narrative at the industry level โ€” shaping how technical buyers across the market perceive the platform, not just individual accounts

  • Advise the ELT on enterprise buyer trends, shifts in IT buying behavior, and how BetterUp's platform and GTM motion should evolve in response

  • Serve as singleโ€‘threaded owner for key companyโ€‘wide initiatives โ€” scaled SE coverage models, platform integration roadmap, AIโ€‘driven SE tooling โ€” mobilizing Product, Engineering, GTM, and Implementation to execute

  • Establish BetterUp as a thought leader in enterprise Solutions Engineering through external speaking, writing, and industry presence

  • Mentor leaders across the SE function and GTM organization; serve as a talent magnet that raises the bar for who wants to work here

If you have some or all of the following, please apply:
  • 15+ years in Solutions Engineering, Preโ€‘Sales, or Technical Consulting, including experience building or leading SE functions at highโ€‘growth enterprise SaaS companies

  • An external reputation in enterprise SE or HR Tech โ€” recognized by peers, referenced by customers, and credible at the CIO/CISO/CFO level before a deal begins

  • A rolodex of Cโ€‘suite and VP Engineering relationships across enterprise HR Tech that you can bring to BetterUp and activate on behalf of strategic deals

  • Proven ability to advise executive leadership (CEO, CRO, CPO) on platform strategy, GTM motion, and SE function design

  • Deep expertise across HRIS, LMS, SSO, API integration ecosystems, and enterprise compliance frameworks โ€” advising at the architecture and strategy level

  • Track record of owning and closing the most complex enterprise deals: Fortune 100, government, multiโ€‘region, multiโ€‘stakeholder, longโ€‘cycle commitments

  • Experience building or significantly maturing an SE function โ€” not just contributing to one

  • Demonstrated thought leadership: external speaking, published writing, or recognized influence on how enterprise SE practice evolves in your market
