The Medtronic Energy Component Center R&D department offers energy solutions such as batteries, feedthroughs, capacitor and connectors for several Medtronic Operating units including Cardiac Rhythm Management (CRM), Surgical Operations and Neuromodulation & Pelvic Health (NPH) Operating Units.
The Senior Mechanical Design Engineer will play an important technical role within the CRM Energy Components Team, supporting New Product Development (NPD) activities focused on rechargeable battery technologies for implantable medical devices. This position will contribute to the design, development, characterization, qualification, and commercialization of energy components while helping ensure the highest standards of safety, reliability, quality, and performance.
Working collaboratively within a cross-functional environment, the Senior Mechanical Design Engineer will partner with Systems Engineering, Product Development, Manufacturing, Supplier Quality, Reliability, Regulatory Affairs, and Strategic Sourcing teams to develop innovative component solutions that improve patient outcomes worldwide.
This position is located in Brooklyn Center, MN within the Cardiac Rhythm Management (CRM) operating unit and is co-located with the MECC Manufacturing Plant.

A Day in Life:

In general, the following responsibilities apply for the Principal Mechanical Design Engineer role. This includes, but is not limited to the following:

Component Technology Development

  • Design and development of rechargeable energy components, including batteries, capacitors, and feedthrough technologies, for implantable medical devices.
  • Develop and maintain component requirements, specifications, verification plans, and qualification strategies aligned with system and product requirements.
  • Translate device, manufacturing, and system-level needs into component-level design inputs and engineering requirements.

Engineering Analysis and Verification

  • Apply engineering analysis, modeling, simulation, and experimental methods to evaluate component performance, reliability, and robustness.
  • Plan and execute characterization, verification, and validation activities to demonstrate compliance with product requirements.
  • Support prototype development, testing, and data analysis to drive design decisions and product improvements.
  • Conduct technical investigations and contribute to root cause analyses for component and system performance issues.

Product Development Support

  • Support New Product Development programs through concept development, design refinement, testing, and commercialization activities.
  • Participate in design reviews and risk management activities throughout the product development lifecycle.
  • Contribute to product improvements focused on quality, reliability, manufacturability, and cost optimization.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Collaborate closely with Systems Engineering, Research & Technology, R&D, Reliability, Supplier Quality, Manufacturing Engineering, Regulatory Affairs, and Project Management teams.
  • Partner with suppliers and manufacturing teams to support component development, qualification, and issue resolution.
  • Effectively communicate technical findings, risks, and recommendations to project teams and stakeholders.

Documentation and Compliance

  • Generate and maintain engineering documentation in accordance with Medtronic quality systems and design control requirements.
  • Ensure component designs comply with applicable regulatory requirements, international standards, and internal engineering best practices.
  • Support audits, regulatory submissions, and design history file documentation activities as required.

Qualifications

Must Have - Minimum Requirements

TO BE CONSIDERED FOR THIS ROLE, PLEASE BE SURE THE MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS ARE EVIDENT ON YOUR RESUME

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Materials Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or STEM discipline and minimum of 4 years of technical work experience OR advanced degree with 2 years of work technical experience.

Nice to Have

  • Experience working in a highly regulated industry, preferably within the medical device sector.
  • Experience supporting New Product Development is preferred.
  • Experience with modeling, simulation, and analytical tools such as MATLAB, ANSYS, Monte Carlo methods, or similar engineering analysis techniques.
  • Strong foundation in engineering principles, statistical analysis techniques, and problem-solving methodologies.
  • Working knowledge of Design Controls, Risk Management, Verification & Validation (V&V), and reliability engineering principles.
  • Excellent technical communication skills, with the ability to effectively communicate complex concepts to diverse technical and cross-functional audiences.
  • Highly self-motivated, detail-oriented, and capable of collaborating effectively within large, cross-functional teams to drive technical solutions and achieve project objectives.
