What is a Solidworks?

A SolidWorks job typically involves using the SolidWorks CAD (computer-aided design) software to create, modify, and analyze 3D models and engineering drawings. Professionals in this role may work in industries like manufacturing, automotive, aerospace, or product design. Responsibilities can include designing mechanical components, creating technical documentation, and collaborating with engineers and production teams. SolidWorks jobs may range from entry-level drafting positions to advanced engineering roles requiring extensive experience. Proficiency in SolidWorks and a strong understanding of mechanical design principles are often essential for success in this field.

What does a Solidworks do?

Professionals using SolidWorks spend much of their day creating and editing 3D models, generating detailed engineering drawings, and collaborating with team members on design iterations. They often review project requirements, participate in design reviews, and make adjustments based on feedback from engineers or clients. Problem-solving and troubleshooting design issues are common tasks, especially when preparing models for prototyping or manufacturing. Regular communication with cross-functional teams ensures that designs meet functionality, manufacturability, and quality standards.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a Solidworks?

To thrive in a SolidWorks role, you need strong proficiency in 3D CAD modeling, mechanical design principles, and engineering documentation, usually supported by a degree in mechanical engineering or a related field. Familiarity with SolidWorks software, CAD data management tools, and relevant certifications like Certified SolidWorks Associate (CSWA) or Professional (CSWP) are highly valued. Strong problem-solving ability, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help set candidates apart. These skills enable efficient product development, clear technical documentation, and successful collaboration on engineering projects.

Is SolidWorks a good career?

SolidWorks is a widely used CAD software for mechanical design, and careers involving SolidWorks typically include roles such as mechanical engineer, design engineer, or CAD technician. These positions often require technical skills, certifications, and familiarity with engineering principles, offering opportunities in manufacturing, product development, and engineering firms.

Is Solidworks in demand?

SolidWorks is a widely used CAD software in engineering, manufacturing, and product design, and demand for professionals skilled in it remains strong due to ongoing needs for 3D modeling and mechanical design. Job opportunities often require proficiency in SolidWorks, along with related skills such as engineering principles and certification, making it a valuable skill in technical fields.

What professions use SolidWorks?

SolidWorks is widely used by mechanical engineers, product designers, CAD technicians, and industrial designers to create detailed 3D models and technical drawings. Professionals in manufacturing, aerospace, automotive, and consumer product development often rely on SolidWorks for designing and prototyping parts and assemblies. Proficiency in the software is valuable for roles requiring precise engineering and design skills.

Job description

The Role
We are seeking a Mechanical Engineer to design and develop battery modules and propulsion integration systems.
This position is open at the Level III or Level IV depending on experience, technical depth, and demonstrated system ownership.
You will be responsible for designing hardware that moves from concept through validation and into production, balancing performance, weight, cost, and manufacturability within aerospace certification constraints.
What You'll Do
  • Design and develop mechanical systems for battery modules and propulsion integration
  • Own 3D CAD models and generate release-ready 2D drawings (ASME Y14.5)
  • Perform tolerance stack-ups and configuration management
  • Conduct structural, thermal, and vibration analysis (classical methods + FEA)
  • Develop and execute design verification plans (DVP&R)
  • Support environmental qualification testing (shock, vibration, thermal, altitude)
  • Optimize packaging for weight, volume, cost, and manufacturability
  • Collaborate with electrical, manufacturing, and test engineering teams
  • Interface with suppliers and support production ramp
  • Troubleshoot hardware issues and lead root cause investigations

Level Expectations
Mechanical Engineer III
  • 4-7 years of mechanical design experience
  • Independently owns subsystem design from concept through production release
  • Advanced SolidWorks proficiency
  • Strong GD&T and tolerance analysis capability
  • Experience designing for high-reliability environments

Mechanical Engineer IV
  • 7+ years of progressive mechanical design experience
  • Demonstrated system-level ownership from architecture through qualification
  • Expert-level CAD and FEA proficiency
  • Serves as a technical lead on complex structural and thermal challenges
  • Guides validation strategy and mentors other engineers

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering
  • Strong proficiency in SolidWorks (modeling, detailing, revision control)
  • Experience designing for manufacturability (machining, sheet metal, molding, casting)
  • Experience performing structural and/or thermal analysis
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, high-accountability development environment

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with DO-160, MIL-STD-810, or similar environmental testing standards
  • Experience with aerospace or high-voltage propulsion systems
  • Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering
