What is a SolidWorks designer?

A SolidWorks Designer is a professional who specializes in using SolidWorks, a 3D computer-aided design (CAD) software, to create and modify detailed models and drawings for engineering and manufacturing projects. They develop parts, assemblies, and technical documentation used in the design and production of various products. SolidWorks Designers work closely with engineers and product development teams to bring concepts to life, ensuring designs are accurate, manufacturable, and meet project requirements.

What does a SolidWorks designer do?

SolidWorks is a computer-aided design (CAD) and computer-aided engineering (CAE) application for Microsoft used by engineers, industrial designers, and manufacturing teams to model designs before building prototypes. A SolidWorks designer is an expert drafter whose duties and responsibilities are to use SolidWorks to analyze and render engineering designs. You work with design teams to 3D model their initial drawings and schematics in a computer environment. You help the engineers and manufacturers address dimensioning issues, design concerns, and to visualize what a product will look like.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a SolidWorks designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Solidworks Designer, you need strong mechanical design skills, a solid understanding of engineering principles, and typically a degree in mechanical engineering or a related field. Mastery of Solidworks CAD software, familiarity with PDM systems, and relevant certifications such as Certified SolidWorks Associate (CSWA) or Professional (CSWP) are highly valued. Attention to detail, problem-solving ability, and effective communication help designers collaborate well and deliver precise work. These skills and qualifications ensure accurate, manufacturable designs and efficient teamwork in engineering projects.

What are the most common challenges faced by SolidWorks designers when working on multidisciplinary teams?

Solidworks Designers often collaborate with engineers, manufacturers, and project managers, which can present challenges such as aligning design intent with technical requirements or manufacturing constraints. Effective communication is crucial to ensure that design revisions meet both aesthetic and functional needs while staying within project timelines. Additionally, Solidworks Designers may need to quickly adapt to feedback from different stakeholders and integrate changes to maintain project momentum. Being proactive in sharing updates and clarifying design decisions helps foster smooth teamwork and successful project outcomes.

Can you make money with Solidworks designer?

A SolidWorks designer can earn a competitive salary depending on experience, location, and industry. Skilled designers with certifications and proficiency in CAD software often have higher earning potential and may work in engineering, manufacturing, or product development environments.

Is SolidWorks a good career?

A SolidWorks designer is a skilled professional who creates detailed 3D models and technical drawings using SolidWorks software, often working in engineering or manufacturing environments. The role offers steady employment opportunities, especially for those with strong CAD skills and relevant certifications, and can lead to advanced design or engineering positions.

Meta works with the top architects and contractors in the intermountain west, creating objects with a quality and style few other shops can replicate. Currently, Meta Designs is looking to expand the design department! We are searching for a full-time designer/drafter for an entry to mid-level position. This individual needs to be highly proficient at Solidworks, and CAD and design thinking, and will ideally have a background in construction, mechanical engineering, industrial design, architecture, and metal fabrication.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Parametric modeling skills and the foresight and planning to deal with 500+ part assemblies is required.
  • Accurate and adjustable models are necessary, as this is construction. Models must be able to adapt to changes in on-site condition and design intent rapidly.
  • Creation of shop drawings in Solidworks.
  • Must create drawings that communicate design intent and function to client/contractor for approval.
  • Must create drawings that communicate how to build and assemble your design to fabricators in the shop.
  • Must create drawings that communicate how to install your design to our installation crews.
  • Management of project from ideation to installation is necessary for success.
  • Ordering material, contacting vendors, maintaining relationships with clients, ensuring quality in the shop, etc.
  • Report to Design Manager and Project Manager daily.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • College degree in industrial design, mechanical engineering, or equivalent experience in design and construction.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in Solidworks (knowledge of both part, assembly, and drawing creation).
  • Minimum 2 years of experience related to the construction industry or fabrication.
  • Strong handle on geometry and math, with a preference for those who have field dimensioning experience.
  • Constant attention to detail and strong organization skills.
  • Skills in design thinking, problem solving, rapid ideation, and a general knowledge of building/fabrication.
  • Metal fabrication knowledge and experience is desired, but not required.
