Solidworks Simulation information

What is the difference between Solidworks Simulation vs Mechanical Engineer?

AspectSolidworks SimulationMechanical Engineer
CredentialsCAD and simulation software proficiency, certifications like CSWA or CSWPEngineering degree (B.S. or higher), professional licensure often preferred
Work EnvironmentDesign firms, manufacturing, product developmentEngineering firms, manufacturing, R&D departments
Industry UsagePrimarily in product design, testing, and analysisDesign, analysis, project management, and oversight

Solidworks Simulation specialists focus on performing finite element analysis and testing within CAD environments, while Mechanical Engineers have broader roles including design, analysis, and project management. Both roles often collaborate but differ in scope and responsibilities.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a SolidWorks Simulation Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a SolidWorks Simulation Engineer, you need a strong background in mechanical engineering principles, finite element analysis (FEA), and proficiency with SolidWorks software, often supported by an engineering degree. Familiarity with simulation modules, CAD integration, and relevant certifications like CSWP-Simulation are typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication set standout professionals apart in this role. These skills are crucial for producing accurate simulations that inform design decisions and ensure product reliability and safety.

What is SolidWorks Simulation?

SolidWorks Simulation is a suite of analysis tools integrated into the SolidWorks CAD software that allows engineers and designers to test and validate their 3D models virtually. It uses finite element analysis (FEA) to simulate real-world conditions such as stress, heat, vibration, and motion, helping to predict product performance before physical prototypes are built. SolidWorks Simulation helps reduce development time and costs by identifying potential design issues early in the process, enabling better decision-making and product optimization.

What are some common challenges faced when using SolidWorks Simulation in a collaborative engineering environment?

One common challenge when using SolidWorks Simulation in a team setting is ensuring that simulation models are properly integrated with ongoing CAD design changes. Collaboration often requires clear communication between design engineers and simulation specialists to keep analysis files up to date and relevant. Additionally, managing version control and avoiding overwriting each other's work can be complex without a well-defined workflow. Teams often address these challenges by using Product Data Management (PDM) systems and establishing standardized procedures for model sharing and documentation.

Job description

Summary

FIRST RF is seeking a highly motivated Mechanical Engineer with demonstrated expertise in FEA analysis methods to support the development of advanced RF and antenna systems for defense and aerospace applications. This role focuses on structural, shock, dynamic, and thermal simulation of complex electronic and RF assemblies operating in demanding environments across land, sea, air, and space platforms.

You will work closely with multidisciplinary engineering teams to predict and solve mechanical challenges before hardware is built, helping ensure mission-critical performance and reliability for our customers.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead structural, thermal, and dynamic simulations for RF systems and electronic assemblies using a suite of Altair (now Siemens) simulation tools (Hypermesh, Optistruct, RADIOSS, Hyperlife), and SolidWorks Simulation.
  • Perform finite element analysis (FEA) to evaluate:
    • Thermal performance and heat dissipation
    • Thermo-Structural integrity
    • Shock and vibration survivability
    • Fatigue/Durability
    • Environmental requirements under MIL-STD-810 and related conditions
    • Develop and validate simulation models through correlation with environment, thermal, and vibration test data
  • Collaborate with RF, mechanical, and electrical, and systems engineers to optimize designs for
    • Weight
    • Manufacturability
    • Reliability
    • Environmental performance
    • RF compatibility
  • Support the design and packaging of high-reliability electronic and RF hardware for aerospace and defense applications

  • Create and maintain engineering documentation, analysis reports, and test correlation data
  • Support root-cause investigations and troubleshooting activities during integration and test
  • Ensure compliance with ITAR, customer requirements, and applicable industry and military standards
Required Education and Experience
  • Must have U.S. citizenship and ability to obtain a U.S. Security Clearance
  • Bachelorโ€™s degree in Mechanical Engineering, or related field
  • 5+ years of relevant mechanical engineering experience in aerospace, defense, electronics packaging, or related industries
  • Strong experience performing structural, thermal, and vibration simulation on complex assemblies
  • Proficiency with simulation tools such as
    • Altair (now Siemens) Software Suite (Preferred)
    • SolidWorks Simulation (Preferred)
    • MSC Nastran
    • NX Nastran
