Expertise with SolidWorks software, familiarity with CAD standards, and certifications like Certified SolidWorks Associate (CSWA) are highly valued. Attention to detail, strong problem-solving skills, and clear communication are important soft skills for collaborating with engineers and clients. These skills ensure that models are accurate, manufacturable, and meet project requirements effectively and efficiently.

What is harder, AutoCAD or SolidWorks?

For a SolidWorks modeler, AutoCAD and SolidWorks are different types of CAD software with distinct focuses; AutoCAD is primarily 2D drafting, while SolidWorks emphasizes 3D modeling and parametric design. The difficulty depends on the user's experience and the specific tasks, but many find SolidWorks more complex due to its 3D capabilities and engineering features. Proficiency in both can enhance a modeler's versatility and job prospects.

What are the typical daily responsibilities of a Solidworks Modeler?

A Solidworks Modeler spends most of the day creating, modifying, and optimizing 3D models and technical drawings based on project specifications and engineering input. They often collaborate closely with engineers, project managers, and manufacturing teams to ensure designs are feasible and align with production processes. Daily tasks may also include revising models based on feedback, maintaining documentation, and assisting in design reviews to troubleshoot potential issues. This role requires strong attention to accuracy and detail, as the models directly influence the success of the final product.

What job makes $10,000 a month without a degree?

Job description

Who We Are

Continental Engineering and Manufacturing (CEM) is a family-owned company with roots going back to 1983 — and we're proud of it. Based in Chaska and Frazee, Minnesota, we've spent over 40 years specializing in drive shaft components and assemblies, growing alongside our customers and our team. We've never had a single layoff in our history, and that's not an accident. We take care of our people.

Our shop does it all: precision CNC machining, welding, assembly, balancing, and more — serving customers across North America with a level of quality and reliability they keep coming back for. We're ISO 9001-2015 certified, continuously investing in our equipment and technology, and genuinely proud of the culture we've built together.

The Role

We're looking for a full-time SolidWorks Drafter to join our team and take ownership of CAD drawings for our core product line — driveline components and assemblies, as well as custom machined parts. You'll be the person who brings precision to the page, creating and maintaining the blueprints our machinists and engineers rely on every day.

No prior experience with driveline products? No problem — we'll get you up to speed. What matters most is that you know SolidWorks, you care about doing things right, and you work well with others.

You'll also get some exposure to our sales and customer support side, helping with application training when needed.

What You'll Be Doing

  • Creating and revising 3D SolidWorks models and 2D drawings for driveline components, driveline assemblies, and custom machined parts
  • Converting legacy prints into clean, modern CAD drawings
  • Applying GD&T and proper tolerances to parts and assembly drawings
  • Producing detailed fabrication and assembly prints, BOMs, and weld callouts
  • Collaborating closely with engineers and machinists to make sure everything is accurate and manufacturable
  • Keeping CAD files, revision history, and documentation organized within SolidWorks PDM (or equivalent)

What We're Looking For

  • 2-year degree or certificate in Drafting, CAD, Mechanical Technology — or equivalent hands-on experience
  • Solid proficiency in SolidWorks (parts, assemblies, solid models, and 2D drawings)
  • Working knowledge of GD&T and standard drafting practices
  • Familiarity with machining, welding, and manufacturing processes
  • Someone who can work independently, juggle multiple projects, and stay organized
  • Strong attention to detail — you notice things others miss

What We Offer

We believe taking care of our team is just as important as taking care of our customers. Here's what you can expect:

  • Set weekday schedule — no weekends, ever
  • Air-conditioned shop
  • Medical insurance with only a $500 annual deductible — 100% paid by CEM
  • Dental & vision insurance — 50% paid by CEM
  • Generous paid time off starting from your very first day
  • Paid holidays from day one
  • Annual bonuses
  • 401(k) with 4% company match
  • Quarterly team luncheons and holiday parties
  • A stable, family-owned company with 43 years and zero layoffs

Since 1983, we've been at the forefront of precision machining, welding, and assembly, which has complemented our original focus on drive shaft components and assemblies. We serve a diverse clientele across North America and beyond, offering CNC horizontal and vertical milling, CNC horizontal and vertical turning (with robotic loading), broaching, hobbing, balancing, painting, welding, assembly, inspection, and stocking programs all supported by continuous investments in upgrading equipment and cutting-edge technology.
At Continental, we foster a strong, positive culture that values teamwork, collaboration, respect, and the growth of every individual. With an impressive 42-year history of stability and a proud record of never having a single layoff, we provide our employees with a secure and supportive environment.
