How much do solidworks internship jobs pay per hour?

As of Jun 11, 2026, the average hourly pay for solidworks internship in the United States is $19.31, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $16.11 and $20.91 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is SOLIDWORKS mostly used for?

SOLIDWORKS is primarily used for 3D computer-aided design (CAD), allowing users to create detailed models, assemblies, and technical drawings of mechanical parts and products. It is widely used in engineering, product development, and manufacturing to visualize, simulate, and document designs efficiently.

What types of projects can I expect to work on during a Solidworks internship?

As a Solidworks intern, you will typically be involved in hands-on design and modeling projects, such as creating 3D parts, assemblies, and detailed engineering drawings. You may also assist in prototyping, revising existing designs, and collaborating with engineers or product development teams to solve real-world design challenges. Interns often get exposure to the full design process, from brainstorming concepts to supporting manufacturing or testing phases, providing a comprehensive experience that builds both technical and teamwork skills.

What is a Solidworks internship?

A Solidworks internship is a temporary position, often for students or recent graduates, where individuals gain practical experience using Solidworks, a popular computer-aided design (CAD) software. Interns typically assist engineering teams by creating 3D models, technical drawings, and prototypes for various projects. This hands-on experience helps interns develop valuable CAD skills, understand industry workflows, and build their professional portfolios. Many internships also provide mentorship and networking opportunities that can lead to full-time employment in engineering or design fields.

Can I get SOLIDWORKS for free?

SolidWorks offers a free trial version for new users to evaluate the software, typically lasting 30 days. Students and educators can access free or discounted versions through educational programs, while internships may provide access through company licenses or training resources. However, the full professional version generally requires a paid license.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a SolidWorks Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a SolidWorks Intern, you generally need a background in mechanical engineering or a related field, with foundational knowledge of 3D modeling and CAD principles. Proficiency in SolidWorks software, and familiarity with related tools such as PDM systems or simulation modules, are typically expected. Attention to detail, problem-solving ability, and effective communication are standout soft skills for collaborating with teams and interpreting design requirements. These skills and qualities are vital for producing accurate designs, learning quickly, and supporting engineering projects efficiently.

How much does SOLIDWORKS cost?

SolidWorks is a professional 3D CAD software typically available through a subscription model costing around $3,500 annually for a standard license. Educational and startup discounts may reduce costs, and the software often requires a valid license for full features used in engineering and design internships.

Is SOLIDWORKS better than AutoCAD?

For a Solidworks Internship, understanding the differences between SOLIDWORKS and AutoCAD is useful; SOLIDWORKS is primarily used for 3D parametric modeling and mechanical design, while AutoCAD is more common for 2D drafting and architectural drawings. The choice depends on the specific industry and project requirements, and proficiency in both can be advantageous for engineering and design roles.

What is the difference between Solidworks Internship vs Mechanical Engineering Internship?

AspectSolidworks InternshipMechanical Engineering Internship
Required CredentialsBasic CAD skills, coursework in CAD or designEngineering fundamentals, coursework in mechanics, thermodynamics
Work EnvironmentDesign labs, CAD software use, product development teamsManufacturing plants, design offices, R&D departments
Employer & Industry UsageManufacturers, product design firms, engineering consultanciesEngineering firms, manufacturing companies, aerospace, automotive

Solidworks Internship focuses on CAD design, modeling, and product development using Solidworks software, often within manufacturing or design teams. Mechanical Engineering Internship covers broader engineering principles, including mechanics and thermodynamics, with exposure to various engineering tasks. Both internships prepare candidates for engineering careers but differ in technical focus and work environment.

About LiquidPiston
LiquidPiston, Inc. (LPI) is an advanced technology company developing compact, high-performance rotary engines based on a new thermodynamic cycle. Our propulsion systems are enabling new capabilities in defense, aerospace, and commercial applications. We are now expanding our hybrid-electric propulsion efforts to fixed-wing VTOL/UAS platforms and seeking top talent to join our team.
Position Overview
Weโ€™re looking for a driven and hands-on aerospace engineering intern to join our team in developing and prototyping fixed-wing VTOL and UAS aircraft powered by LiquidPistonโ€™s hybrid rotary engine. In this role, youโ€™ll collaborate with multidisciplinary engineers to turn early-stage concepts into functional, flight-ready hardware. If you're passionate about cutting-edge aviation, thrive in fast-paced environments, and want to work on systems that actually fly, this is a unique opportunity to make an impact.
Youโ€™re someone who loves building real thingsโ€”whether itโ€™s designing, fabricating, or testing hardware, youโ€™re not afraid to get your hands dirty. You bring a strong analytical mindset, think from first principles, and learn best by doing. You take initiative, communicate clearly, and work well both independently and as part of a close-knit team.
You're currently pursuing a degree in aerospace engineering, mechanical engineering, or a related field, and you have experience with CAD and simulation tools like SolidWorks, CATIA, or ANSYS. Bonus points if youโ€™ve worked on personal or academic projects involving prototyping, flight systems, or advanced mechanical design.
Key Responsibilities
  • Assist in the design and development of subsystems for fixed-wing VTOL aircraft incorporating LiquidPistonโ€™s hybrid engine technology
  • Collaborate with design, analysis, testing, and manufacturing teams to support integration and prototyping
  • Participate in hands-on assembly, testing, and troubleshooting of mechanical and structural components
  • Contribute to documentation and delivery of monthly technical reports to Department of Defense (DoD) partners
  • Support technical presentations and maintain organized engineering documentation
Preferred Skills and Experience
  • Finite Element Analysis (FEA) focused on composite aircraft structures
  • Rapid prototyping with additive manufacturing and composite materials (carbon/glass fiber, epoxy)
  • Experience with autonomous or R/C aircraft systems and electromechanical integration
  • Strong documentation and presentation skills using Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Familiarity with aerospace design constraints and lightweight structural optimization
Our Culture
At LiquidPiston, we challenge convention and solve hard problems. We move fast, think boldly, and iterate quickly. Our team thrives on collaboration, creativity, and resilience. We take calculated risks and believe that every setback is a steppingstone toward breakthrough innovation.

All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment regardless of race, color, religion, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, or veteran status, and will not be discriminated against on the basis of disability.
All offers of employment at LiquidPiston are contingent upon the successful completion of a pre-employment background check, drug screening and credit check.ย
