Solidworks Inspection information

What is a solidworks inspector?

A SolidWorks Inspector is a professional who uses SolidWorks Inspection software to create and manage inspection reports, ensuring product dimensions and quality meet specifications. They typically analyze CAD models, generate detailed inspection documentation, and may hold certifications in quality assurance or metrology. This role often requires familiarity with GD&T and measurement tools.

Is solidworks inspection necessary?

SolidWorks Inspection is a specialized tool used to streamline the creation and management of inspection reports and quality documentation. While not always mandatory, it helps ensure accuracy and consistency in quality control processes, especially in manufacturing environments that require precise measurement and compliance with standards. Proficiency in SolidWorks Inspection can enhance a technician's ability to perform efficient inspections and maintain product quality.

What jobs can you get with a SolidWorks certification?

SolidWorks Inspection certification can qualify you for roles such as quality inspector, manufacturing engineer, or CAD technician, where you use SolidWorks software to create, review, and validate technical drawings and inspection reports. These positions often require knowledge of GD&T, measurement tools, and quality standards in manufacturing environments.

What is the difference between Solidworks Inspection vs CAD Technician?

AspectSolidworks InspectionCAD Technician
CertificationsSolidworks Certification, Inspection-specific trainingAutoCAD, Solidworks, or other CAD software certifications
Work EnvironmentManufacturing, quality control, engineering firmsDesign offices, engineering departments, manufacturing
Primary FocusCreating inspection reports, verifying part dimensionsDesigning, drafting, and modifying CAD models

Solidworks Inspection specialists focus on quality assurance by generating inspection reports and verifying part dimensions using Solidworks Inspection software. CAD Technicians primarily work on designing and modifying CAD models across various projects. While both roles require Solidworks skills, Solidworks Inspection emphasizes quality control, whereas CAD Technicians focus on design and drafting tasks.

How much does solidworks inspection cost?

SolidWorks Inspection is a software tool used for quality control and measurement documentation, and its cost varies depending on the license type and user needs. Typically, a perpetual license can range from $2,000 to $4,000, with annual maintenance fees of around 20% of the license cost. Pricing may also depend on whether the user opts for a standalone or network license, and additional modules or training can affect the overall expense.

Job description

CNC Programmer – Mastercam, 2020 version and newer

For over 140 years, Horsburgh & Scott has been a leader in the design, manufacture, and repair of custom industrial gears, gearboxes, and power transmission equipment. We are seeking an experienced CNC Programmer to join our Manufacturing Engineering team and help produce some of the largest, most complex precision components in the industry.

Position Summary

The CNC Programmer develops and optimizes older and newer CNC programs using Mastercam, 2020 and version and newer and SolidWorks to manufacture precision components for industrial gearboxes and gearing systems. This position works closely with Engineering, Production, and Quality to improve machining efficiency, reduce setup time, and ensure the highest level of quality.

What You'll Do

  • Create CNC programs using Mastercam from SolidWorks models and engineering drawings.
  • Develop machining strategies, toolpaths, setup sheets, and tooling requirements.
  • Optimize cycle times, feeds, speeds, and cutting tool performance.
  • Support production by troubleshooting and improving existing CNC programs.
  • Collaborate with machinists, engineers, and quality personnel to improve manufacturing processes.
  • Design and improve work holding and fixturing.
  • Verify programs through simulation and machine proof-outs.
  • Support Lean Manufacturing and continuous improvement initiatives.

Equipment You'll Support

Programming experience with large CNC machine tools is preferred, including equipment like:

  • Giddings & Lewis Horizontal Boring Mills
  • Schiess Horizontal Boring Mills
  • G & L Vertical Turning Centers
  • Farrell Machine Tools

Key Responsibilities

  • Read and interpret blueprints, engineering drawings, setup sheets, and work orders to determine machining requirements and sequences
  • Perform full machine setups including tooling selection, fixture installation, work holding, and workpiece alignment for large-scale components
  • Operate horizontal boring mills to perform facing, boring, drilling, contouring, and precision finishing operations on large castings and fabricated assemblies
  • Set up, load, and execute CNC programs; make at-machine edits or adjustments as required to meet dimensional and surface finish requirements
  • Adjust machining parameters such as speeds, feeds, depth of cut, and tool offsets to maintain accuracy, efficiency, and tool life
  • Monitor machining operations to ensure conformance to specifications, making real-time corrections as needed
  • Inspect machined components using precision measuring instruments including micrometers, calipers, bore gauges, dial indicators, and height gauges
  • Perform in-process quality checks and verify critical dimensions to ensure compliance with engineering tolerances
  • Maintain machine cleanliness and perform routine preventive maintenance and daily operator care
  • Document production data, inspection results, and any nonconformances; promptly communicate machine or quality issues to supervision
  • Collaborate with quality, engineering, and production teams to ensure proper interpretation of requirements and continuous process improvement
  • Adherent to all safety procedures, including proper rigging and handling of large and heavy components

Qualifications

  • Associate degree in Manufacturing Engineering Technology, Mechanical Engineering Technology, CNC Programming, or equivalent experience.
  • 10 years of Machining and control experience on the Boring Mills and Lathes
  • 5 years of CNC programming experience with Siemens, Fanuc, G & L 800 and G & L 8000 controls
  • Proficiency with Mastercam, 2020 and newer version and SolidWorks.
  • Strong knowledge of G-code, blueprint reading, GD&T, machining processes, tooling, and fixture design.
  • Strong Problem-solving skills
  • Experience with large-part machining or heavy industrial manufacturing preferred.
  • Assist with operating software updates as needed
  • This position requires strong mechanical aptitude, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently on large-scale, high-value components in a heavy industrial manufacturing environment.
  • Gear manufacturing experience is a plus

Why Horsburgh & Scott?

  • Work on large, custom-engineered industrial equipment—not high-volume production parts.
  • Various machine and gear manufacturing equipment.
  • Stable company with over 140 years of industry leadership.
  • Competitive compensation and comprehensive benefits.
  • Opportunities for professional growth and career advancement.

If you're passionate about precision manufacturing and enjoy solving complex machining challenges, we'd like to hear from you.
