Solidworks Inspection information

What is a Solidworks Inspection inspector?

A Solidworks Inspection inspector is a professional responsible for using Solidworks Inspection software to verify and validate product dimensions and quality. They review CAD models, generate inspection reports, and ensure parts meet design specifications, often working with measurement tools and quality standards. Certification in quality management and familiarity with CAD and inspection processes are typically required.

What is the difference between Solidworks Inspection vs CAD Technician?

AspectSolidworks InspectionCAD Technician
CertificationsSolidworks Certification, Inspection-specific trainingAutoCAD, Solidworks, or other CAD software certifications
Work EnvironmentManufacturing, quality control, engineering firmsDesign offices, engineering departments, manufacturing
Primary FocusCreating inspection reports, verifying part dimensionsDesigning, drafting, and modifying CAD models

Solidworks Inspection specialists focus on quality assurance by generating inspection reports and verifying part dimensions using Solidworks Inspection software. CAD Technicians primarily work on designing and modifying CAD models across various projects. While both roles require Solidworks skills, Solidworks Inspection emphasizes quality control, whereas CAD Technicians focus on design and drafting tasks.

Job description

Summary

Industrial Inspection & Analysis (IIA) is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Metrology Scanning Technician to join our team in Minnetonka, Minnesota.

This position supports advanced dimensional inspection, reverse engineering, 3D scanning, and industrial CT scanning projects for customers across aerospace, medical device, defense, additive manufacturing, consumer products, and industrial manufacturing industries. Working alongside experienced metrology professionals, you will gain hands-on experience with cutting-edge inspection and measurement technologies while developing skills that support long-term career growth in metrology, quality, engineering, and nondestructive testing.

At IIA, quality is more than a process—it's who we are. We are committed to delivering accurate data, exceptional customer service, and technical expertise that helps our customers solve complex manufacturing and engineering challenges.

This position involves access to export-controlled technical data, defense-related products, and Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI). Employees are expected to follow all company, customer, and regulatory requirements related to data protection, cybersecurity, confidentiality, and export compliance.

Equipment & Software You'll Work With

Equipment

  • Industrial CT Scanners
  • Laser Scanners
  • Structured Light 3D Scanners
  • Portable CMM Arms
  • Vision Measurement Systems
  • Precision Hand Measurement Tools

Software

  • PolyWorks
  • VGStudio MAX
  • Geomagic Design X
  • Geomagic Wrap
  • SolidWorks
  • Microsoft Office

What You'll Do

3D Scanning & Data Collection

  • Operate advanced 3D scanning systems including laser, structured light, portable CMM arm, and computed tomography (CT) scanning.
  • Capture high-accuracy geometric data from manufactured components, assemblies, tools, and prototypes.
  • Prepare parts and scanning setups to optimize data quality and project efficiency.
  • Process, align, and clean scan data to produce point clouds, meshes, inspection datasets, and engineering deliverables.

Inspection & Metrology

  • Perform dimensional inspections using scan data, portable CMM arms, vision systems, optical measurement systems, and conventional measurement tools.
  • Conduct CAD-to-part, part-to-part, and deviation analysis using metrology software.
  • Generate inspection reports and communicate results clearly to customers and internal stakeholders.
  • Support first article inspections (FAI), root cause investigations, product validation, and engineering studies.

Reverse Engineering & Engineering Support

  • Assist with reverse engineering projects through scan-based geometry recreation and CAD model development.
  • Support engineering teams by providing accurate digital representations of physical components.
  • Collaborate with customers to understand technical requirements and recommend appropriate measurement solutions.

Customer Service & Project Execution

  • Deliver projects accurately, professionally, and on schedule.
  • Maintain strong communication with customers and coworkers throughout project execution.
  • Contribute to a culture centered on service, integrity, safety, quality, and continuous improvement.
  • Maintain equipment, workspaces, and laboratories in a clean, organized, and customer-ready condition.

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Ability to read engineering drawings and interpret basic GD&T concepts.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and technical curiosity.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet project deadlines.
  • Frequently stand, walk, bend, and reach throughout the workday.

  • Ability to work at a computer workstation for extended periods.
  • Ability to safely handle customer components and inspection equipment.
  • Ability to work in laboratory, warehouse, and customer environments as required.

Preferred

  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, Mechanical Design, Manufacturing Technology, CAD Technology, or related field, or currently pursuing a related degree.
  • Experience with 3D scanning, metrology, dimensional inspection, quality assurance, manufacturing, or CAD.
  • Familiarity with GD&T and dimensional inspection principles.
  • Experience with PolyWorks, VGStudio MAX (Volume Graphics), Geomagic Suite, SolidWorks, or similar engineering and metrology software.
  • Experience operating portable CMM arms, laser scanners, structured light scanners, or other advanced measurement systems.
  • Experience in aerospace, medical device, additive manufacturing, precision manufacturing, or related industries.

Career Growth Opportunities

This role provides a pathway into advanced metrology, reverse engineering, industrial CT scanning, dimensional inspection, and nondestructive testing. As skills and experience develop, technicians will have opportunities to expand into higher-level technical roles supporting complex inspection projects, customer-facing engineering activities, advanced data analysis, and specialized measurement technologies.
