What is a SolidWorks designer?

A SolidWorks Designer is a professional who specializes in using SolidWorks, a 3D computer-aided design (CAD) software, to create and modify detailed models and drawings for engineering and manufacturing projects. They develop parts, assemblies, and technical documentation used in the design and production of various products. SolidWorks Designers work closely with engineers and product development teams to bring concepts to life, ensuring designs are accurate, manufacturable, and meet project requirements.

What does a SolidWorks designer do?

SolidWorks is a computer-aided design (CAD) and computer-aided engineering (CAE) application for Microsoft used by engineers, industrial designers, and manufacturing teams to model designs before building prototypes. A SolidWorks designer is an expert drafter whose duties and responsibilities are to use SolidWorks to analyze and render engineering designs. You work with design teams to 3D model their initial drawings and schematics in a computer environment. You help the engineers and manufacturers address dimensioning issues, design concerns, and to visualize what a product will look like.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a SolidWorks designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Solidworks Designer, you need strong mechanical design skills, a solid understanding of engineering principles, and typically a degree in mechanical engineering or a related field. Mastery of Solidworks CAD software, familiarity with PDM systems, and relevant certifications such as Certified SolidWorks Associate (CSWA) or Professional (CSWP) are highly valued. Attention to detail, problem-solving ability, and effective communication help designers collaborate well and deliver precise work. These skills and qualifications ensure accurate, manufacturable designs and efficient teamwork in engineering projects.

What are the most common challenges faced by SolidWorks designers when working on multidisciplinary teams?

Solidworks Designers often collaborate with engineers, manufacturers, and project managers, which can present challenges such as aligning design intent with technical requirements or manufacturing constraints. Effective communication is crucial to ensure that design revisions meet both aesthetic and functional needs while staying within project timelines. Additionally, Solidworks Designers may need to quickly adapt to feedback from different stakeholders and integrate changes to maintain project momentum. Being proactive in sharing updates and clarifying design decisions helps foster smooth teamwork and successful project outcomes.

Can you make money with Solidworks designer?

A SolidWorks designer can earn a competitive salary depending on experience, location, and industry. Skilled designers with certifications and proficiency in CAD software often have higher earning potential and may work in engineering, manufacturing, or product development environments.

Is SolidWorks a good career?

A SolidWorks designer is a skilled professional who creates detailed 3D models and technical drawings using SolidWorks software, often working in engineering or manufacturing environments. The role offers steady employment opportunities, especially for those with strong CAD skills and relevant certifications, and can lead to advanced design or engineering positions.

Job Overview

We are seeking experienced SolidWorks Specialists to contribute their expertise to an innovative project at the intersection of mechanical engineering and emerging AI technology. In this role, you will help improve next-generation AI systems by creating, reviewing, and refining mechanical CAD models and technical documentation. No prior AI experience is required—your engineering and CAD expertise are what matter most.

Key Responsibilities
  • Create fully parametric 3D CAD models of mechanical parts and assemblies using SolidWorks based on detailed design requirements.

  • Edit and update existing parametric CAD models while maintaining robust feature trees, design intent, and model integrity.

  • Review and audit CAD models for dimensional accuracy, tolerance application, manufacturability, and overall design quality.

  • Apply Design for Manufacturability (DFM) principles across manufacturing processes including injection molding, sheet metal fabrication, CNC machining, casting, and forging.

  • Develop and maintain clear engineering documentation to support design revisions and AI model training.

  • Translate engineering requirements into structured CAD data suitable for AI learning and validation.

  • Collaborate remotely with cross-functional teams, providing clear written reports, technical documentation, and verbal updates.

Required Skills
  • SolidWorks.

  • Parametric CAD modeling.

  • GD&T (ASME Y14.5).

  • Design for Manufacturability (DFM).

  • Mechanical design.

  • Injection molding.

  • Sheet metal design.

  • CNC machining.

  • Casting and forging.

  • Assembly modeling.

  • CAD editing and feature tree management.

  • Design documentation.
