What is a solids control?

A Solids Control job involves managing drilling fluids and removing unwanted solids during the drilling process in oil and gas operations. Solids control technicians operate equipment such as shale shakers, centrifuges, and desanders to maintain proper mud properties, ensuring efficient drilling and reducing environmental impact. Their responsibilities include monitoring fluid consistency, performing maintenance on machinery, and adhering to safety standards. This role is critical for optimizing drilling performance and minimizing costs.

What are the typical daily responsibilities of a solids control professional?

A Solids Control professional usually spends their workdays operating and monitoring equipment such as shale shakers, centrifuges, and mud cleaners to ensure optimal removal of solids from drilling fluids. They routinely inspect, maintain, and troubleshoot machinery to prevent downtime, as well as document and report performance data and any anomalies to supervisors. The role often requires collaboration with drilling and mud engineers to adapt to changing drilling conditions, ensuring environmental compliance and efficient fluid recycling. This hands-on job typically involves a rotation-based schedule and outdoor work at drilling sites.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the solids control position?

To thrive as a Solids Control professional, you need a strong understanding of drilling operations, mechanical aptitude, and knowledge of equipment used in separating solids from drilling fluids. Familiarity with centrifuges, shale shakers, desanders, and regulatory compliance, as well as certifications such as HAZWOPER or OSHA safety training, are often required. Strong attention to detail, teamwork, and effective troubleshooting abilities help you excel on site. These skills and qualifications are vital to maintaining operational efficiency, complying with safety standards, and minimizing environmental impact in drilling projects.

What does a solids control operator do?

A solids control operator manages equipment that separates solids from drilling fluids during oil and gas drilling operations. They monitor and maintain equipment such as shale shakers, centrifuges, and degassers to ensure efficient removal of solids, helping to protect the environment and improve drilling performance. The role often requires knowledge of fluid systems, safety procedures, and sometimes certifications in hazardous materials handling.

Job description

Who we are:ย ย

Electra isย reinventing ironmaking from the ground upย withย a breakthroughย electrochemical technology that producesย high purityย clean iron and critical co-minerals. With two operating pilots in Boulderย andย a new demonstration facilityย underwayย in Jefferson County,ย we'reย on track to reach commercial scale by the end of the decade. Backed by over $300 million and strategic partnerships with global leaders across mining, steel, and big tech, momentum is on our side.ย ย Recognized by Fast Company as a Most Innovative Company and a Next Big Thing in Tech, and named one of TIME's 100 Climate Leaders,ย we'reย building a company shaping the future of industry.ย Ifย you'reย looking to make an impact and join a teamย that'sย driven, focused, and scaling, we want to hear from you.

What you will do: ย

As a Senior Controls Engineer, you will focus on designing and building data acquisition and process control systems for chemical processing. These systems will integrate instrumentation, controls, plumbing, fluid power, and solids handling to enable novel electromechanical and metallurgical processes for clean iron production.ย  ย ย

Responsibilities include:

  • Design, develop, and maintain electrical, instrumentation, and control (EIC) systems for iron-production processes from concept through detailed design, fabrication, commissioning, and handover
  • Own the full lifecycle of control system design, including P&IDs, I/O lists, control narratives, instrumentation specifications, electrical schematics, panel layouts, and network architecturesย
  • Ensure all control systems are efficient, reliable, safe, compliant with applicable codes/standards (e.g., NEC, ISA, IEC), and aligned with site EHS requirements
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with process engineering, mechanical systems, operations, and R&D teams to define system requirements and control strategies ย
  • Leadย integrationย effortsย forย  newย and existingย equipment, including PLC/HMI/SCADA system architecture and control strategiesย ย
  • Oversee and perform installation, configuration, commissioning, and site acceptance testing (SAT) of control systemsย
  • Conduct system testing, tuning, loop checks, and validation to ensure optimal and stable process performance
  • Identify opportunities for process optimization, advanced control, alarm management, and system reliability improvements
  • Program and troubleshoot Siemens S7 PLCs (TIA Portal), Ignition HMI & SCADA, and associated communication networks ย
  • Develop, maintain, and review electrical design packages in SolidWorks Electrical, including control panel designs, wiring diagrams, and bill of materialsย
  • Specify and source instrumentation and electrical equipment (sensors, transmitters, motors, drives, MCC components, etc.) to meet process and project requirementsย ย
  • Autonomously lead engineering projects or small multi-disciplinary teams, including scheduling, budgeting, technical decision-making, and vendor managementย ย
